
Interior Designer

Summary
The Interior Designer leads the planning, implementation, and operational management of a comprehensive interior design program for a VA organization. They coordinate activities of internal staff and commercial vendors, serve as liaison between the organization and vendors, and manipulate critical information supplied by others to support design decisions.
Qualifications
Time‑In‑Grade: Current Federal employees must have held a GS grade within the past 52 weeks and meet any required time‑in‑grade for the position grade (§GS‑11 requires 52 weeks at GS‑09). Federal service experience is required; SF‑50 evidence must be submitted.
Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): Applicants must meet the specific experience and/or education requirements for the entry grade.
Education: Undergraduate or graduate study in interior design, interior architecture, interior environmental design, or a related field with at least 30 semester hours in interior design, or successful passage of the NCIDQ examination.
Specialized Experience (for grades above GS‑5): At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS‑09) in areas such as design/alteration of interior spaces, programming, space planning, compliance with NFPA, ADA, OSHA, TJC standards, project management, cost estimating, and construction oversight.
Doctoral or equivalent advanced degree, or an LL.M. in a related field, or a combination of graduate education and experience, may satisfy the qualifications when proven by transcripts.

Duties
Perform and manage work related to design of interior environments to promote employee and public health and welfare.
Provide technical expertise to coworkers and contractors, coordinating with engineers, architects, and other designers to ensure compliance with VA regulations and facility design criteria.
Act as a technical representative for design and finish specification matters, managing the facility furniture program.
Influence new construction design from conception through activation with knowledge of use requirements and available resources.
Plan, write procurement packages, supervise installation, and serve as the contracting officer’s representative for all furniture procurements within the facility.
Provide plans, consultation, advice, specifications, and designs for virtually all spaces involved in new construction or renovation.
Review architect/engineer submittals for compliance with VA regulations and facility design criteria.
Schedule and Working Conditions
Full‑time: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; schedule may change based on facility needs.
Telework: The position may be authorized for telework. Eligibility will be discussed during the interview process.
Not a virtual position.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
Work may vary from seated at a computer to extensive walking throughout the facility, interior and exterior sites, and construction sites.
Some lifting ( Travel to showrooms, furniture dealers, and satellite facilities as needed.
Dexterity required for drafting, sketching, and writing.
Pre‑placement physical examination required.
