Description Overview
The Communications and Marketing Department is responsible for advancing The New York Public Library’s (NYPL) mission and priorities through the promotion of its services, resources, locations, collections, programs, events, and exhibitions to a broad array of audiences and communities. The department positions NYPL as a cultural and educational leader and seeks to attract and engage new audiences across New York City and around the world.
NYPL has a global audience of more than 3.5 million followers across multiple social media platforms. The Social Media Associate plays a critical role in bringing the voice and identity of NYPL to life on social media channels and amplifying our offerings and services through the development of creative social media content, including through creative writing and video content.
We are looking for someone we can count on to:
Own:
Writing and executing content for NYPL’s flagship social channels
Teach:
Colleagues how to spot and create engaging content for social media
Learn:
How to create compelling content in NYPL’s voice
Improve:
Working relationships with NYPL affiliated accounts, particularly branch staff who manage their branch social accounts
Some expectations for this role are that within:
1 month, this person will:
Create content as assigned for NYPL’s social media channels, including social media videos
Learn the social media needs of NYPL and familiarize themselves with the different branches, divisions, and research centers
Begin developing relationships across the Library to source content for social
3 months, this person will:
Independently create content for NYPL’s social media channels, including video
6 months and beyond, this person will:
Own flagship social media content streams and support branch social media accounts
Be actively working to increase engagement across flagship NYPL social media accounts
Responsibilities Reporting to the Social Media Manager, the Social Media Associate will:
Research, write, photograph, film, and produce content for NYPL social media channels, including Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and more
Strategize ideas based on NYPL initiatives, current exhibitions, cultural moments, social media trends, etc, in tandem with the social media senior manager and team
Work across platforms to identify and engage with creators, with particular attention to trends happening on social media to engage book, library, and humanities lovers worldwide
Assist in identifying and building strategic relationships with social media content creators
Shoot video and photography using a variety of equipment, including phone, DSLR and/or mirrorless cameras, gimbals, microphones, lights, and other associated tools
Build relationships across the organization to understand content needs and create engaging material
Engage socially with online audiences and create digital audience engagement
Upload, schedule, and manage content for publishing using social media management tools
Support other NYPL-affiliated accounts as needed, including local branch and research accounts
Performs other assigned duties as necessary
Required Education, Experience & Skills Required Education & Certifications
Bachelor's degree or 4+ years of additional related experience required
Required Experience
3+ years of social media production experience
Required Skills
Proficiency in creating engaging social-first videos
Ability to create compelling narratives that capture brand voice while driving engagement
Proficiency in Adobe Premiere and After Effects softwares
Basic image editing/resizing skills
Familiarity with social media publishing and monitoring tools (e.g., SocialFlow, SproutSocial, Meta Business Suite)
Knowledge of best practices for cybersecurity and social posting, as well as current social media trends and tools
Ability to adapt voice to various NYPL styles
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Interest in emerging social media products/tools
Familiarity with the publishing, library, literary, or cultural fields
