Job Summary Salem State University’s Art + Design Department seeks a dedicated Graphic Design Laboratory Assistant to support our thriving creative community. The assistant oversees the operation and maintenance of all facilities instrumental to the effective delivery of the department’s graphic design curriculum, including two computer labs and a print production lab. Responsibilities include ensuring the physical space is functioning at the highest level and working with university personnel on maintenance, upgrades, and inventory. The assistant advises faculty on curriculum development, provides instructional support for students, and serves as a role model while supervising and training student staff and interns. This is a full‑time, 12‑month position with hours from 8 am to 4 pm, and occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
Responsibilities
Oversee operation and maintenance of graphic design labs and print production lab.
Work with university personnel on maintenance, upgrades, and inventory.
Advise faculty on curriculum development.
Provide instructional support for students.
Supervise and train student staff and interns.
Qualifications
BA or BFA in Graphic Design or a related field.
One to three years of experience working with design technology in a professional, academic, or production environment.
Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Apple computers and iOS devices, Adobe Creative Suite, and other relevant software.
Experience maintaining local area networks.
Strong troubleshooting skills with knowledge of ordinary repairs and diagnostics of Apple computers, iOS devices, and printers.
Knowledge of best practices in graphic design production and laboratory procedures.
Experience with graphic design in a professional creative studio and/or production environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Five or more years of professional experience with design technology, including managerial/supervisory experience.
Experience maintaining printing equipment and managing inventory of consumables.
Strong interpersonal skills and sensitivity to students with diverse learning styles.
Ability to set up and maintain peripherals including projectors, scanners, printers, and other computer‑interfaced equipment.
Ability to adapt activities to the changing needs of the technical laboratory.
