Academic College Discovery Director

Position Overview The Director of the College Discovery (CD) Program at BMCC, part of CUNY, leads and manages the opportunity program, reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs. The role oversees planning, delivery, and assessment of academic, financial, and support services that help students succeed.

Responsibilities

Provide visionary leadership and strategic oversight for the College Discovery Program, ensuring alignment with the college's mission and student success goals and compliance with guidelines related to opportunity programs and financial aid.

Manage the program budget, write grant proposals, and acquire funding to support development of new programs and services while ensuring responsible allocation of existing resources and adherence to fiscal policies.

Oversee day‑to‑day operations of the CD program, including student recruitment, admissions, orientation, retention, and graduation support.

Direct a team delivering personalized academic advising, one‑on‑one counseling, career guidance, financial aid support, engagement programming, tutoring, and learning communities for CD students.

Design and implement workshops, seminars, and programming that enhance student success, address academic and personal challenges, and promote student well‑being.

Facilitate students' transition to the college environment through pre‑freshman summer orientation programs.

Promote transfer opportunities for CD students to bachelor’s degree programs, providing guidance throughout the transfer process.

Prepare and submit required reports to BMCC, CUNY Central Office, and other relevant agencies, documenting outcomes and expenditures.

Conduct regular assessments of program impact and use data to inform planning, decision‑making, and program enhancements for continuous improvement.

Help plan and participate in major college events such as orientation, registration, commencement, and other student success initiatives.

Qualifications Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and eight years of related experience.

Preferred qualifications:

Master’s degree in student personnel administration, higher education, counseling, or a related field and four years of administrative and supervisory experience.

Experience in counseling, mental health services, or academic advisement in a higher education setting, supporting diverse and at‑risk student populations.

Familiarity with current higher education practices, theories, research, and policies.

Knowledge of best practices in Student Affairs, including research, assessment, and data‑informed decision making.

Demonstrated success in college‑wide collaborations.

Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, and the ability to build effective working relationships.

Ability to provide courteous and accurate service to students, visitors, and the campus community.

Highly organized and detail oriented.

Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, social media, learning platforms, and other related technologies (preferred).

FLSA Exempt

Compensation and Benefits Salary range is $122,201 - $136,546; salary commensurate with education and experience. Benefits include health plans, retirement/pension benefits and savings plans, tuition waivers for CUNY graduate study, paid time off, and access to academic, arts, and athletic programs.
