
Director of Engineering

The Director of Engineering is responsible for overseeing the full operation, maintenance, and strategic planning of all engineering and facilities functions for a luxury hotel property. This role ensures the highest standards of guest comfort, safety, aesthetics, and operational excellence are consistently delivered. The Director of Engineering leads preventative maintenance programs, capital improvement projects, sustainability initiatives, and compliance with brand and regulatory standards while maintaining a five-star luxury guest experience.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Maintenance
- Direct all engineering and maintenance operations including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, kitchen equipment, pools, spa, and life-safety systems
- Maintain luxury-level guestroom and public space standards at all times
- Develop and execute comprehensive preventative maintenance programs
- Ensure rapid response to guest and operational maintenance requests
- Oversee landscaping, exterior lighting, and aesthetic upkeep of the property
- Maintain all back-of-house areas to luxury hospitality standards
Leadership & Team Management
- Recruit, train, and manage engineering and maintenance team members
- Establish service standards aligned with luxury hospitality expectations
- Conduct performance reviews and professional development planning
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and service excellence
Capital Projects & Renovations
- Plan and manage capital expenditure projects
- Oversee guestroom renovations, public space upgrades, and infrastructure improvements
- Coordinate contractors, vendors, and consultants
- Ensure projects meet luxury brand design and quality standards
- Monitor timelines, budgets, and execution quality
- Prepare and manage annual engineering budget
- Control departmental expenses and utilities costs
- Analyze energy consumption and implement efficiency initiatives
- Manage vendor contracts and service agreements
- Forecast capital replacement needs
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations
- Maintain life-safety systems including fire alarm, sprinklers, and emergency power
- Lead emergency response and disaster preparedness planning
- Conduct safety inspections and risk assessments
- Ensure OSHA and brand safety standards are met
Guest Experience Focus
- Collaborate with Rooms, Housekeeping, and Food & Beverage departments
- Maintain flawless guestroom functionality and presentation
- Support VIP arrivals and special event requirements
- Minimize guest disruption during maintenance and projects
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5–7 years of Engineering leadership experience in a luxury hotel environment (required)
- Prior experience as Director of Engineering or Assistant Director of Engineering in a luxury hotel, resort, or five-star property
- Strong knowledge of luxury hotel systems, guestroom technology, and high-end finishes
- Experience with preventive maintenance systems (CMMS/HotSOS/Knowcross or similar)
- Proven leadership and team management experience
- Strong understanding of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems
- Experience managing capital projects and renovations in an operating luxury hotel
- Budgeting and financial management experience
- Knowledge of life-safety systems and regulatory compliance
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or related field (preferred)
- Luxury and Forbes-rated experience
- Experience with sustainability initiatives and energy management
- Professional certifications (HVAC, pools, and life safety systems)
- Multi-property or resort experience (preferred)
