Position Summary
The genetic counseling assistant (GCA) will work closely with and under direct supervision of genetic counselors and medical geneticists who serve patients with and at risk for inherited medical conditions. This could include involvement with the Pediatric and Adult Genetics Clinics, hospital consults, and out-state genetics clinics. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: assisting in case preparation, coordinating follow-up with patients and lab personnel, contacting patients to document health and family history, completing documentation required for genetic testing and managing a list of pending genetic test results.

1) The individual in this position also has contact with individuals and families who are in distress. It is important that this interaction be done in a confidential, sensitive and empathetic manner, since issues that are involved (e.g. death of an infant, birth of a baby with multiple malformations, recognition of a genetic disorder within a family etc.) are often emotion-laden and anxiety producing for the family. 2) This individual will need to be extremely organized and have the ability to clearly and effectively communicate with patients and members of the genetics division.
Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree

Science related field.
Preferred Experience:
Experience working with patients with disabilities and/or experience with genetics in laboratory setting.
