Your New Role
The Director, Engagement Analytics will lead analytics efforts that help CNN understand how audiences experience, engage with, and return to our digital products across platforms. This role sits at the intersection of Product, Engineering, Experimentation, Design, and Audience teams, translating complex behavioral data into insights that shape product strategy, roadmap prioritization and long‑term engagement growth.
Key Responsibilities
Product & Engagement Analytics Leadership
- Lead strategic analysis of product engagement across web, mobile web and mobile app and CTV, focusing on usage patterns, frequency, retention and behavioral signals that inform product decisions.
- Partner closely with Product, Engineering and Design leaders to embed analytics into product discovery, roadmap planning and post‑launch evaluation.
- Develop and evolve engagement measurement frameworks that distinguish between scale, habit and depth of use.
- Guide interpretation of engagement trends to ensure insights are descriptive, defensible and appropriately bounded by what the data can support.
Measurement, Experimentation & Infrastructure
- Oversee the development and validation of product‑focused metrics, data models and pipelines in collaboration with Data Engineering.
- Partner with product teams to design, evaluate and interpret experiments (A/B tests, feature rollouts, natural experiments) to assess product impact on engagement and retention.
- Ensure consistency and quality across dashboards, reporting and recurring deliverables that support product and engagement decision‑making.
- Identify data quality issues, instrumentation gaps or methodological risks and work cross‑functionally to resolve them.
People Leadership & Analytical Rigor
- Manage, mentor and develop a team of Product and Engagement analysts, providing coaching on analytics methods, storytelling and stakeholder communication.
- Serve as a QA lead for analyst work – reviewing methodologies, assumptions, SQL queries and interpretations to ensure accuracy, consistency and executive readiness.
- Establish best practices for data storytelling, metric interpretation and executive‑level communication.
- Foster a culture of curiosity, rigor and disciplined thinking about what engagement metrics do – and do not – represent.
Stakeholder Communication & Strategy
- Translate complex analytical findings into clear insights and implications for senior Product, Audience and Executive stakeholders.
- Present insights in concise, compelling formats that connect product performance to broader engagement and business objectives.
- Partner with senior analytics and product leaders to shape engagement analytics roadmaps and priorities aligned with CNN’s strategic goals.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- 9+ years of experience in product analytics, digital analytics, data science or similar analytical roles.
- 3+ years of experience as a people manager, with a demonstrated ability to mentor, coach and quality‑check analytical work.
- Advanced proficiency in SQL and experience working with large, complex behavioural datasets.
- Strong experience partnering with Product, Engineering and Design teams on measurement, experimentation and product decision‑making.
- Experience designing and interpreting experiments (A/B testing or quasi‑experimental methods) in a product context.
- Proficiency with data visualisation tools (Tableau, Domo, Looker) and strong slide‑based storytelling skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including experience presenting to senior leaders.
- Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands‑on analytical problem solving in a fast‑paced environment.
- Experience working with dbt, modern data modelling practices or analytics engineering workflows.
Preferred
- Proficiency in Python or other statistical scripting languages.
- Familiarity with digital media, publishing, subscription or news products.
- Experience shaping or operationalising engagement measurement frameworks at scale.
- Background working in highly matrixed organisations with multiple stakeholder groups.
