Finance Director – Lenoir County, NC

We seek a strategic and collaborative finance professional who recognizes the importance of a Finance Department for the community’s health and vitality.
The next Finance Director will help evolve Lenoir County’s financial operations, strengthen accounting practices, modernize systems, and build a future‑focused, service‑oriented Finance Department. This role works closely with the County Manager, Chief Financial Officer, and external consultants to implement strategic improvements, enhance financial reporting, and promote consistency in policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all aspects of the County’s financial operations, including general accounting of revenues and expenditures.
- Conduct financial analysis, reporting, and compliance oversight.
- Collaborate with the Chief Financial Officer on budget preparation, revenue forecasting, and fund balance analysis.
- Administer fiscal control systems, strengthen processes, and ensure sound financial stewardship.
- Lead efforts to optimize the County’s Munis system, reduce manual processes, and improve the accessibility and usefulness of financial information across departments.
- Participate in senior management team meetings and collaborate across departments.
Qualifications
- Graduation with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field.
- Considerable experience in public finance administration, including supervisory experience.
- Local government experience, especially with county government, is preferred.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Successful criminal background and credit check; bondable.
- County residency is not required.
Salary and Benefits
Hiring range: $125,558 – $135,213, commensurate with experience. A signing bonus of up to $5,000 may be available. Benefits include Health Insurance, County contribution to a Health Savings Plan, Dental, 14 paid holidays, Sick and Annual Leave accrual per pay period. The Finance Director participates in the North Carolina Local Government Employees’ Retirement System (NCLGERS) with a 6% pre‑tax employee contribution and is eligible for a 401(k) plan with a 2.5% County contribution along with 457 and Roth 401(k) options.
