Indirect Tax Manager - Hybrid - Houston

Position Summary
Manager, Indirect Tax, is a key contributor to BMC Helix's tax function, combining technical indirect tax expertise with a strong command of tax technology and automation. Reporting to the VP of Tax, this role owns end‑to‑end indirect tax compliance operations, including sales and use tax, property tax, business licenses, and other indirect tax across a multi‑state footprint, while actively driving process modernization through tax technology platforms and automation tools.

This role partners closely with the Order Management, Sales, and Procurement teams to embed sound tax treatment into daily operations and strategic initiatives and is expected to serve as an internal champion for tax technology adoption and continuous improvement.

Deliver indirect tax guidance on transactions, contracts, and business initiatives across all product lines.

Manage a scalable, multi‑state compliance framework that keeps pace with evolving regulatory requirements.

Transformation & Modernization

Champion tax technology tools, drive automation initiatives, and modernize end‑to‑end tax workflows.

Key Responsibilities
Indirect Tax Compliance & Operations

Lead preparation and timely submission of sales & use tax, property tax, business license, and miscellaneous indirect tax filings across multiple states.

Assist with VAT and GST compliance as needed for international entities.

Oversee exemption and resale certificate management, ensuring documentation integrity and audit readiness.

Perform account reconciliations related to indirect taxes and resolve discrepancies tied to the general ledger.

Serve as the primary point of contact for state and local tax audits, inquiries, and information requests.

Track legislative changes, rate updates, and evolving compliance requirements; assess operational impact across the business.

Tax Technology & Automation

Serve as the in‑house subject matter expert on tax determination and compliance platforms.

Lead or support ERP tax module configuration (Oracle, or similar), including system upgrades, tax engine integrations, and testing of new workflows.

Identify and implement automation opportunities across the indirect tax compliance lifecycle, from data extraction and return preparation to filing and reconciliation.

Partner with IT and Finance Systems teams to ensure tax technology infrastructure is scalable, well‑documented, and aligned with business changes.

Evaluate and implement new tax technology tools as the business grows, including platforms supporting e‑invoicing, real‑time reporting, and digital compliance.

Build and maintain data pipelines and reporting dashboards that provide real‑time visibility into tax liabilities, filing status, and audit exposure.

Business Advisory & Cross‑Functional Collaboration

Provide technical guidance on indirect tax consequences of proposed transactions, new products, and business model changes.

Collaborate cross‑functionally with Accounting, Legal, Sales, and Operations to ensure tax considerations are embedded in contracts, pricing, and systems.

Support tax due diligence in M&A or acquisition scenarios, including evaluation of indirect tax exposures and integration of acquired entities.

Analyze legislative updates and communicate operational impacts to relevant business stakeholders.

Qualifications & Experience

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.

4‑6 years of progressive indirect tax experience at a large multinational company or public accounting firm.

Demonstrated hands‑on experience with Vertex O Series or a comparable tax determination platform (e.g., Avalara, ONESOURCE).

Experience in software, SaaS, or technology business models, including familiarity with digital goods and services taxability a plus.

Exposure to VAT/GST compliance for international entities.

Proficiency in data analytics tools (Power BI, Alteryx, or similar) applied to tax workflows a plus.

Compensation Information
The annual base salary range represents the low and high end of the BMC salary range for this position. Actual salaries depend on a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training, licensure, and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The range listed is just one component of BMC's employee compensation package. Other rewards may include a variable plan and country‑specific benefits. At BMC, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $114,525 - $190,875.
