Associate Underwriter – Corporate Central Operations (Buffalo, New York)
Merchants Insurance Group, a leading Property and Casualty insurer in the Northeast, invites qualified candidates for the Associate Underwriter position. The role offers a hybrid work schedule requiring two full days per week in the office. Candidates will learn commercial lines underwriting, support new business development, and collaborate with independent agents and team members.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Develop knowledge of Commercial Lines Underwriting, including guidelines, product coverages, pricing tools, state regulatory requirements, rating and processing systems.
Complete formal industry training (Commercial Lines Coverage Specialist, AU, AINS, and other AICPCU courses) as directed by management.
Cultivate solid relationships with agents and internal staff to achieve optimal outcomes for Merchants and policyholders.
Review accounts beyond individual authority with the Regional Underwriting Manager or Supervisor and recommend a course of action.
Achieve commercial lines regional production goals and loss ratio objectives for the assigned territory.
Qualifications & Skills
College degree or equivalent work experience.
Up to three years of Property and Casualty insurance experience.
Some knowledge and training in underwriting commercial lines accounts.
Insurance‑related coursework preferred.
Strong organizational, time‑management, and attention‑to‑detail skills.
Excellent communication and customer‑service skills.
Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word.
ImageRight knowledge is a plus.

Pay Information
The estimated salary ranges from $62,500 to $70,000 based on leveling and geography, plus an equity component and comprehensive benefits. Actual compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and qualifications.
