Protection & Controls Designer – Substations Position Overview
We are seeking a Protection & Controls (P&C) Designer to support the detailed design of high‑voltage substation protection and control systems for transmission and distribution projects. This role focuses on the creation and modification of P&C drawings and design deliverables under the direction of P&C Engineers and Project Leads.
The ideal candidate has strong experience producing control schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and cable schedules using AutoCAD Electrical and is comfortable working in a utility or EPC environment supporting substation upgrades, expansions, and greenfield builds.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and revise protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, and point‑to‑point drawings
Create relay panel layouts, control house layouts, and equipment wiring diagrams
Prepare terminal plans, cable schedules, and bills of material
Support the development of AC/DC control schematics, including battery and charger systems
Apply and maintain utility and client drafting standards across all design packages
Coordinate drawing content with P&C engineers, physical substation designers, and project managers
Incorporate redlines, markups, and field changes into final construction documents
Perform self‑checks and assist with QA/QC reviews to ensure drawing accuracy and consistency
Support as‑built documentation following construction completion
Required Qualifications
3+ years of experience supporting substation protection & control design
Strong proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical
Experience producing control schematics (AC/DC), wiring and interconnection diagrams, relay and control panel layouts, cable schedules and terminal plans
Familiarity with substation equipment (protective relays, breakers, CTs, PTs, RTUs, panels)
Understanding of basic electrical symbols, ladder logic, and wiring conventions
Ability to work independently while coordinating closely with engineering teams
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Substation Design Suite (SDS – Protection & Control)
Utility or EPC project experience
Familiarity with relay manufacturers (SEL, GE, ABB, Hitachi Energy)
Exposure to IEC‑61850 drawing conventions
Associate degree or technical training in drafting, electrical technology, or related field

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $110000.00/hr.
