Position Overview
First United Methodist Church Richardson (FUMCR) is seeking a dynamic and engaging Director of Student Music to lead youth in worship through a variety of musical styles. This individual will play a vital role in sharing our mission, ministries, and values through music leadership, planning, and meaningful relationships. The ideal candidate is a skilled musician and choral director with a passion for youth ministry and the ability to inspire both spiritual and musical growth. This role works closely with the Music and Youth Ministries to create a cohesive and impactful worship experience.

Key Responsibilities

Cultivate a welcoming, inclusive, and spiritually enriching youth music program

Collaborate closely with Music Ministry and Youth Ministry teams

Direct The Journey Youth Choir (ages 12–18)

Partner with the Associate Director of Music to plan worship music for the 8:45 a.m. Sunday services (August–June)

Align youth choir programming with the Youth Ministry calendar

Plan and lead the annual summer choir tour

Manage the youth choir budget and contribute to fundraising strategy

Oversee fundraising initiatives (e.g., Dessert Theater, Christmas greenery sales, babysitting events)

Develop partnerships with local musicians and community choral organizations

Participate in the adult Chancel Choir (weekly rehearsals, Sunday services, and special events)

Ideal Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Choral Conducting, or Music Performance

3–5 years of experience directing youth choirs

Demonstrated ability to recruit, motivate, and develop young musicians

Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills

Proficiency in piano

Knowledge of sacred music literature, including United Methodist traditions

Strong rehearsal technique and understanding of adolescent vocal development

High-level musicianship, including vocal and conducting skills

Experience teaching a variety of musical styles

Background in musical theater preferred

Experience in church music leadership preferred
