Position Summary:

NeighborHealth is seeking an Optical Consultant to support the delivery of high-quality optical services across our clinic locations. This role is ideal for individuals interested in building a career in optical care while gaining hands‑on experience in a supervised clinical setting. The Optical Consultant will assist patients with frame selection, order processing, lens fabrication and general optical services while working under the direct supervision of a licensed optician. This role does not perform independent optical measurements and requires adherence to all scope of practice guidelines.

What You’ll Do
The Optical Consultant supports the optical team by providing excellent customer service and assisting patients throughout the eyewear selection, ordering processing, and lens fabrication while working under supervision of a licensed optician.

The successful candidate will be able to perform the following responsibilities:

Greet and assist patients in a professional, friendly, and culturally responsive manner

Support patients in selecting frames based on style, fit, and prescription needs

Educate patients on lens options, coatings, and insurance coverage

Enter and process eyewear orders accurately in the system

Verify insurance eligibility and benefits for optical services

Assist with inventory management, including stocking and organizing frames

Perform basic frame adjustments and repairs (as trained and permitted)

Maintain cleanliness and organization of optical displays and optical laboratory

Collaborate with licensed opticians to ensure accurate and timely order completion

Provide follow‑up support for patients regarding orders, pickups, and concerns

Must work under the supervision of a licensed optician at all times when performing optical duties

Does not perform or independently take optical measurements (including PD, seg height, etc.)

May assist in preparation for measurements but cannot finalize or verify them

Ensure timely turnaround of eyeglass orders

Escalates all clinical or prescription‑related questions to a licensed optician

Career Growth and Development
This role offers a structured pathway toward optician licensure in Massachusetts. Optical Consultants gain hands‑on experience while working under licensed opticians and are encouraged to pursue an Associate Degree in Opticianry, along with American Board of Opticianry (ABO) certification, National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE), and the ABO Practical Certification (ABOP). Upon meeting state requirements through the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Dispensing Opticians, employees may advance into Licensed Optician roles with increased responsibility and career growth opportunities.

What You’ll Bring

High school diploma or equivalent required

1–3 years of customer service or retail experience preferred

Opticianry degree or optical experience is preferred

Interest in pursuing a career in the optical field

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with diverse patient populations

Ability to work effectively in a team‑based, fast‑paced environment

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office and/or EMR systems preferred)

Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism

Bilingual skills preferred (based on patient population needs)

Compensation
Starting at $21.00 per hour, and up to $30.00 based on years of relevant experience.
