HVAC Mechanic or Senior HVAC Mechanic

Facilities Management’s Health System Physical Plant at the University of Virginia offers an exciting opportunity for HVAC professionals. The position can be filled at either HVAC Mechanic or Senior HVAC Mechanic level depending on the finalist’s credentials and experience. HVAC personnel perform installation, repair, and maintenance on package and central HVAC systems, provide preventive maintenance, service and overhaul large central units, and determine equipment needs. The role requires working with little supervision, and Senior HVAC Mechanics must also lead and train staff, maintain safety compliance, and contribute to positive customer relations.

HVAC Mechanic Duties

Perform HVAC installation and repairs, along with diagnostic and preventative maintenance on a variety of air conditioning units, ventilation equipment, temperature and humidity controls, and refrigeration equipment.

Specify, estimate, and install equipment, refrigeration, and systems in accordance with applicable standards and requirements.

Respond to emergency requests.

Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, as well as refer customers to the supervisor when appropriate.

Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations, the National Electrical Code.

Assist other trades and become familiar with various equipment and sequence of operation.

Perform miscellaneous duties such as snow and ice removal, as assigned by the supervisor.

Train and oversee Assistant and Apprentice work.

Senior HVAC Mechanic Duties

Perform preventative maintenance service, repairs, and component replacements on industrial, commercial, light-commercial, and residential HVAC systems.

Visually inspect and digitally monitor/adjust HVAC systems using both JCI and ALC platforms.

Provide constructive feedback on assigned tasks to improve effectiveness and customer value.

Perform all work in accordance with codes and foster a safe work environment by following FM and OSHA safety rules and procedures.

Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, as well as refer customers to the supervisor when appropriate.

Using computerized maintenance management software, accurately enter time and materials used on jobs and provide useful descriptions of conditions found and steps taken.

On tasks requiring multiple workers, guide the activities of HVAC Mechanics and Assistants.

Provide training and encouragement of apprentices.

Participate fully in FM responses to major events or emergencies, including clearing of sidewalks and steps following snow storms.

Required Qualifications for HVAC Mechanic

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: Four [4] years of experience in the HVAC trade.

Licensure: Journeyman or higher HVAC license; Valid Driver's license.

Required Qualifications for Senior HVAC Mechanic

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: Seven [7] years of experience in the HVAC trade.

Licensure: Journeyman or higher HVAC license; Valid Driver's license.

Compensation

HVAC Mechanic: $24.50 to $30.00 per hour ($50,960 to $62,400 Annually)

Senior HVAC Mechanic: $31.00 - $36.00 per hour ($64,480 to $74,880 Annually)

Physical Demands
Requires regular walking, standing, kneeling, crawling, squatting, and climbing ladders or stairs, lifting and carrying of various weights. Repetitive motion for grasping, pulling, pushing, and operating hand and power tools; work may occur in a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions and environments.
