Asst Golf Course Superintendent

Position Summary This position is a highly responsible professional that manages 18 holes of a golf course, the greens, and surrounding areas – approximately 200 acres. Responsibilities include building maintenance, environmental and safety compliance, event organization, budget oversight for building use and facilities maintenance, and general supervision of the course and crew.

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in bentgrass greens management; crew supervision; aerification; operational knowledge of golf course equipment and chemical application.

Responsibilities

Manage the 18‑hole golf course and greens, orchestrate building maintenance, ensure environmental and safety compliance, and coordinate event planning.

Maintain the annual budget for building use and facilities maintenance.

Supervise a crew of 5–8 full‑time staff and 10–20 part‑time student employees.

Apply turfgrass management practices, delegate tasks, keep up to date with golf‑course maintenance processes, establish effective working relationships, follow UGA Golf Course Best Management Practices Guidelines, and use irrigation software proficiently.

Provide training and continuing education for new and current employees; schedule work within budget; manage time‑keeping, approvals, and performance evaluations.

Supervise field irrigation maintenance: diagnose issues with irrigation heads, control boxes, valves, and pump stations; troubleshoot problems and maintain irrigation system operation.

Maintain all maintenance facilities, ensuring buildings are clean, safe, and compliant with environmental regulations. Perform regular inspections.

Manage chemical buildings: organize and label chemical storage, enforce spill containment, maintain safety gear, and keep monthly check‑sheet records. Coordinate with UGA Environmental Safety Division as required.

Implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) by scouting for pests across 150 acres, selecting appropriate control actions, and considering environmental, budgetary, and regulatory constraints.

Apply pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and fertilizers in accordance with label instructions, university policies, and all applicable regulations; maintain and calibrate spray equipment; observe safety protocols; keep accurate usage records and support chemical inventory management.

Supervise and inspect golf‑course bathrooms, rain shelters, maintenance office, and shop bathrooms; enforce clean‑room standards, coordinate repairs with contractors, and prepare proposals for major repairs.

Maintain Underground Storage Tank certifications (Class A, B, C), perform inspections, train employees on Class C certification, and keep required signage and spill containment in place.

Coordinate and schedule equipment needs and changes with the maintenance mechanic; communicate program schedules, report performance, and schedule preventive maintenance.

Plan, budget, and report golf‑course improvement projects, ensuring documentation of cost, time to completion, and justification.

Use irrigation software to operate pumps and irrigation systems, schedule adjustments, troubleshoot issues, monitor water usage, and meet local water restrictions and best practices. Maintain logs of total usage and oversee bidirectional communication with the irrigation technician.
