Orange Media Network – Photographer 2026‑2027
This position is part of Orange Media Network at Oregon State University. The role involves pitching, researching, photographing, and providing photographs for the Daily Barometer, Beavers Digest, and DAMchic, on a part‑time basis (maximum 24 hours per week). The photographer works with editors, writers, and photo chiefs to capture stories that reflect the OSU community’s news value. Photographs are used for print and online media and may accompany articles, blog posts, and social media updates.
Responsibilities
Pitches, accepts and delivers photos that stand alone or accompany content for OMN.
Collaborates with OMN writers to fully capture news stories that provide value to the OSU community.
Provides fair and accurate coverage that represents the story and the people involved.
Seeks and pursues news in a timely manner.
Suggests story, photo, or video coverage to enhance online presentation.
Captures breaking news and covers urgent events as needed.
Attends all staff and team meetings required by editor‑in‑chief.
Writes accurate captions in AP style.
Mentors and guides new hires when requested.
Performs additional duties assigned by the adviser.
Responds to emails, messages, team chats, and phone calls on the same day, professionally representing OMN.
Maintains project tracks via Basecamp, Discord, or other platforms.
Notifies the adviser immediately when ethical, legal, personnel, or controversial issues arise.
Follows all OMN policies and procedures.
Acts professionally at all times.
Ensures equitable representation and inclusion, honoring historically under‑represented communities.
Qualifications
Knowledgeable in photo news gathering and fact‑checking strategies.
Willing to learn AP style and work within SPJ Code of Ethics.
Flexible to work nights, weekends, and academic breaks.
Able to meet deadlines.
Strong communication and public‑speaking skills.
Organized, reliable, and detail‑oriented.
Comfortable giving and receiving constructive feedback.
Professional and composed when dealing with challenging individuals or situations.
Experience building and maintaining relationships with sources, stakeholders, and community partners.
Eligibility & Academic Requirements
Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a relevant program.
Must meet academic standing requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible.
Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard:
High School student: regularly enrolled or in a homeschool program.
Undergraduate/Post‑baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term.
Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term.
Graduate student: 5 credit hours per term.
Graduate international student: 9 credit hours per term.
International students may carry fewer hours if approved by the Office of International Services.
Transferable Skill Development
Students in this role will develop essential career‑readiness skills in communication, critical thinking, and professionalism, in alignment with the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) competencies.
