Summary
The Grants Specialist plays a significant role within Safe Horizon’s Foundation and Government department by identifying, co-stewarding, and successfully raising funds from foundation funding sources. They will also serve as a writing and project management partner for large and complex government and private grant applications. This position combines grant writing, project and proposal coordination, and operational proficiency to help strengthen internal workflows, improve the department’s efficiency, and ensure timely submissions of grant applications. The ability to coordinate and manage relationships with multiple departments within the organization is a necessary skill for this position.
Responsibilities
Grant Portfolio Management and Proposal Development
Lead a defined portfolio of foundation grants from prospecting, fit assessment, submission, award, and reporting
Manage stewardship and cultivation activities, such as meetings, site visits, and written communication, ensuring funders receive timely and thoughtful engagement
Serve as a front-line fundraiser, building and sustaining authentic relationships with potential and current funders
Primary writer for proposals and reports within their portfolio and serve as supporting proposal writer for larger grants
Serve as a strategic thought partner to determine how proposals and reports are framed for funders, prioritizing agency and funder alignment
Proposal Project Management and Salesforce Collaboration
Provide project management support for assigned large government and foundation RFPs, develop timelines, tasks lists, checklists, and deadlines
Support the Grants team to ensure Salesforce funder records are updated and maintained
Work with the Associate Director of Foundation and Government and Development Operations to build out the Salesforce Government submission tracker and ensure all retroactive information is documented and updated
Qualifications
2+ years direct experience in grant writing, preferably from both public and private sources;
Strong project management and relationship management skills;
Familiarity of working on grant proposals and/lifecycle; from prospecting through reporting
Strong working knowledge of local and national foundation donors and funding trends;
Advanced, superior writing and research skills – the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to capture the purpose, importance, and impact of programs and projects with an emphasis on effective structure, grammar, succinctness, and alignment with foundations’ giving interests;
Commitment to Safe Horizon agency values of client-centered practice, anti-racism, and family-centered programming, and ability to reflect these values in work products;
Working knowledge of Salesforce (or comparable donor database), and Microsoft Office Suite;
Strong verbal, interpersonal and communications skills and attention to detail;
Ability to work independently, manage a number of competing priorities in order to meet deadlines with well-crafted proposals and reports;
Experience with budget preparation and/or analysis – the ability to review budgets and ensure alignment with the funder’s interests and the proposal narrative;
Background in social justice or human services preferred;
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience.
