As a Maintenance Specialist, you will work outdoors year-round in Arizona's desert environment, taking a hands-on role in building and maintaining the flood control structures that protect our communities. Your skilled construction and maintenance expertise directly supports public safety while preserving the natural landscape.
Beyond flood protection, the Flood Control District maintains multi-use facilities, including hiking trails, bike paths, and open spaces that enhance the quality of life across Maricopa County. This is more than a maintenance role; it is an opportunity to strengthen infrastructure, to protect neighborhoods, and care for community spaces that residents use and value every day.

We Require
Two years of experience using a variety of semi-skilled repair and trades tasks in a construction and maintenance environment
High school diploma or GED
Must possess a valid Arizona Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a tanker endorsement
Maricopa County is required by state and federal regulations to conduct a pre-employment safety history investigation for all positions that require an applicant to possess a commercial driver's license (CDL). Maricopa County is also required to conduct a pre-employment safety history investigation for positions that directly impact commercial motor vehicle safety, but which may not specifically require a valid CDL
Other Requirements
Valid Pest Control Certification (Right of Way) from the Department of Agriculture or the ability to obtain within six months of hire
This position requires a post-offer drug screen for CDL holders
We Also Value
Three or more years of general maintenance experience
Experience working in the public sector
Experience in the operation of a variety of tools, equipment, and vehicles
Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and maps
Knowledge of landscape and roadway maintenance and repair methods and materials
Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations involved in truck and equipment operations
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions, and First Aid
Skill to safely and efficiently operate and maintain trucks and equipment in accordance with standard operating and safety procedures
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Job Contributions
Maintain Flood Control structures by performing carpentry, electrical, irrigation repair, installation, masonry, painting, pesticide application, plumbing, road repair, weed abatement, or welding work to construct or perform maintenance on all FCD structures and properties
Operate a variety of trucks, equipment, and hand tools in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures
Assist the Field Supervisor in preparing daily activity, material/equipment usage, personnel reports, and ordering and picking up materials, supplies, and tools
Supervise maintenance crews in the absence of the Crew Leader or Field Supervisor
Perform other duties as assigned or required
Working Conditions
Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantly
Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration
Incumbent may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel
The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties and responsibilities, the employee may be exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation
Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software, and Hardware
The position generally conducts business out in the field utilizing various hand tools for numerous construction and maintenance duties, including shovels, rakes, pickaxes, brooms, and varying-sized electric and hand tools. Familiarity with four-wheel-drive capabilities and self-recovery winching techniques will be needed from time to time.
Protective Equipment Required
Fieldwork will often be conducted in remote locations under potentially extreme weather environments. Attire for the position will be provided and maintained by Maricopa County, and has the potential for General Construction and/or Field Inspection PPE required to perform duties daily. This includes, but is not limited to, safety-toe footwear, hard hats, high-visibility vests, eye protection, and durable pants, such as jeans.
