Job Summary

As a Lead Dispensary Pharmacy Tech at AYR, you bring the same patient-first commitment as our dispensary team and then some. Youre a go-to resource for your teammates: helping new techs find their footing, modeling best practices on the floor, and stepping up when the pharmacist needs a trusted partner to keep things running smoothly.

Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Education & Consultation

  • Welcome patients and caregivers with warmth and professionalism, creating a comfortable, judgment-free experience from the moment they arrive.
  • Consult with qualified patients and caregivers under pharmacist supervision to understand their needs and guide them toward appropriate cannabis products.
  • Educate patients on product types, delivery methods, dosing guidance, and potential interactions translating your pharmacy knowledge into clear, approachable conversations.
  • Build lasting patient relationships by being a consistent, trusted resource throughout their care journey.

Team Leadership & Training

  • Serve as a mentor and day-to-day resource for Dispensary Pharmacy Techs, helping new team members acclimate and develop confidence on the floor.
  • Support the onboarding and training of new techs, including product knowledge, compliance procedures, POS systems, and patient interaction best practices.
  • Model AYRs values Passion, Courage, Kindness, Reliability, and Progress in every interaction and hold the standard for the team.
  • Communicate team questions, patterns, and concerns to the pharmacist or GM to support continuous improvement.
  • Step in as a floor lead during high-volume periods or in the absence of direct management, ensuring smooth, compliant operations.

Dispensary Operations

  • Assist the pharmacist in filling and verifying prescription items as permitted under Virginia state law.
  • Input patient data and medication orders accurately into the POS system and applicable Virginia state systems.
  • Label, package, and dispense cannabis products in full compliance with Virginia Board of Pharmacy regulations.
  • Monitor the prescription fulfillment process and proactively resolve issues to maintain accuracy and efficiency.

Inventory & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate patient records, product tracking logs, and inventory controls.
  • Support all aspects of regulatory compliance within a Virginia-licensed cannabis dispensing facility.
  • Uphold the dispensarys professional reputation through consistent, detail-oriented practice.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must maintain an active State Pharmacy Technician license.
  • Minimum two years of experience working as a pharmacy technician; cannabis dispensary experience preferred.
  • Prior experience mentoring, training, or leading peers in a retail or pharmacy setting strongly preferred.
  • Customer-facing experience required.
  • Candidates must demonstrate the highest ethical standards.
  • Strong customer service mindset with a focus on patient care.
  • Ability to lead by example and foster a supportive, collaborative, and productive team environment.
  • Weekend availability required.

Education

  • Pharmacy Technician certification required.
  • Must maintain an active State Pharmacy Technician license.

Working Conditions

This person may be exposed to cannabis plant material, kief, cleaning chemicals, and fumes. Although systems are in place to remove these byproducts, there is still exposure to some degree. This role operates in a licensed Virginia cannabis dispensing facility subject to state regulatory oversight and inspection at any time.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting, standing, and walking motion/movement required throughout the shift.
  • Ability to remain on feet for extended periods in a retail dispensary environment.
  • Occasional lifting or moving items up to 25 pounds.

Virginia Regulatory Compliance Notice

This position operates within a Virginia-licensed cannabis dispensing facility and is subject to all applicable requirements under Virginia Code Title 4.1, Chapter 16, Virginia Board of Pharmacy regulations (3VAC10-30), and oversight by the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority. All activities must be performed under the personal, on-premises supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The Pharmacist-in-Charge is responsible for determining the number of interns, technicians, and trainees who can be safely and competently supervised at one time, not to exceed six persons performing pharmacy technician duties simultaneously, per Virginia Code 4.1-1602(M).
