Position Summary
The Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Idaho invites applications for a full-time, Assistant Professor of Theatre in Scenic Design. This tenure track position will begin Fall 2026 with a 2/3 teaching load. The department seeks a collaborative artist‑scholar with a strong professional design portfolio, teaching experience, and a commitment to training the next generation of theatre‑makers. The department values innovation, interdisciplinarity, and equity in both creative practice and pedagogy.
Primary Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in scenic design
Lead the MFA Scenic Design program, including mentoring graduate students and overseeing thesis and creative work
Teach in related areas (e.g., digital drafting, scenic painting, design theory) as qualified
Supervise student designers and teaching assistants in both classroom and production settings
Maintain an active professional creative practice in regional
ational/international venues
Participate in student recruitment, both graduate and undergraduate
Serve on department, college, and university committees
Contribute to curriculum development, program assessment, and interdisciplinary initiatives
Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair
Teaching Modality
Must be able to teach in‑person on the University of Idaho’s Moscow campus
Proficiency in digital and physical design practices strongly encouraged
Comfortable working/teaching with remote learners
Minimum Education/Degree Required
Listed degree qualification is required at time of hire.
Required Qualifications
MFA in Scenic Design or closely related field
Minimum of five years of professional experience at the regional theatre level or higher
Experience teaching scenic design and related areas
Experience in researching theatrical design
Experience collaborating with others
Preferred Qualifications
Experience teaching at the collegiate level
Record of mentorship and supervision of student design work
Portfolio demonstrating a range of design practices and interdisciplinary engagement
Evidence of sustained creative achievement
Proficiency in digital design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Vectorworks, SketchUp, Adobe Suite)
Experience with drafting and the ability to teach digital drafting techniques
Evidence of engaged scholarship, including community, socially responsive, or interdisciplinary design work
Demonstrated commitment to access in theatre education and design
