Podcasting Teaching Artist
About Building Beats
Building Beats is an NYC nonprofit that helps young people build 21st-century skills through music production, DJing, podcasting, and creative tech. We run free and low-cost programs across schools, libraries, shelters, and community sites in NYC (and select LA sites), serving youth from elementary through young adult ages.
The Role
What You’ll Do
Student Outcomes: Each cohort produces a 3–5 minute episode, talk segment, or mini-series; facilitate end-of-program listening sessions or live showcases.
Plan & Adapt: Co-plan lessons that align with Building Beats scope & sequence; differentiate for mixed skill levels; integrate SEL and culturally relevant content.
Set Up Portable Studios: We believe any space can turn into a studio - teaching artists ensure clean (as possible) audio capture in non-studio spaces.
Assessment & Admin: Take daily attendance in Airtable; create lesson plans for all workshops; administer brief pre/post surveys; attend meetings with site staff and Building Beats admin as needed.
Partnership & Communication: Coordinate with site staff; communicate clearly with the BB team via email/Slack; uphold youth-safety norms and classroom agreements.
What You Bring
1+ year teaching or youth-work experience (school, after-school, camps, or community settings).
Practical podcast skills: scripting, interview technique, mic technique, room setup, editing, mixing, exporting, and basic loudness standards.
Comfort with recording in DAWs - familiarity with Soundtrap is a plus!
Strong classroom management; trauma-informed, compassionate, and culturally responsive pedagogy.
Reliable, organized, and on-time with paperwork (attendance, surveys, background check paperwork, etc).
Passion for youth voice, storytelling, and creative career pathways.
Nice-to-Haves
Spanish or other language skills; radio/live broadcast experience; experience supporting students with IEPs/ELLs; portfolio of youth-friendly lesson materials.
Ability to teach any of our other subjects: Music Production, DJ or Music Coding.
Schedule & Location
When: Mostly after-school (2–6 pm), some in-school blocks.
Where: NYC (all boroughs)
Hours: 2–10 hours/week per residency; multiple sites available based on fit and availability.
Compensation & Hiring
Competitive hourly rate for instruction (\$65/hr) and paid prep/admin time + training (\$25/hr).
Teaching Artists are required to go through fingerprinting and background checks as needed per site.
Building Beats is an equal opportunity employer. We value a diverse team representative of our students and communities. Candidates of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
