About the Position
Do you have hands‑on work experience with RF equipment? Enjoy working outdoors in all types of weather? Maine Public is hiring a full‑time Broadcast Transmission Engineer to join a team dedicated to maintaining our first‑class broadcasting systems.
Maine Public is a non‑profit, community‑supported public media organization and the sole provider of statewide (and beyond) public broadcasting coverage. As one of only seven statewide PBS/NPR joint licensees, we operate 21 radio frequencies, five free over‑the‑air television signals, three television translators, and 26 links of microwave.
We broadcast a mix of local and national programming, educational programs, news and public affairs shows, documentaries, and arts and cultural programs, and we also serve as the backbone of Maine's Emergency Broadcast System.
Responsibilities
Maintain, adjust, and configure all radio and television broadcasting, remote control, microwave STL, computers, and supporting equipment involved in the operation of a broadcast transmitting facility.
Perform routine visits to transmission facilities to ensure continuity of broadcasting operations.
Ensure compliance with all applicable FCC rules and regulations.
Diagnose and repair control systems as required.
Implement complex control systems under the direction of the Transmission Manager, utilizing hands‑on computer and networking skills.
Communicate with Master Control regarding equipment installation, outages, and durations.
Coordinate with and supervise vendors and suppliers at transmission sites.
Maintain buildings, roads, and grounds at transmitter sites.
Assist the Technology Department with engineering, design, installation, implementation, and troubleshooting of systems.
Maintain up‑to‑date written documentation and provide training as needed.
Travel throughout the State of Maine and access remote sites via 4WD truck, ATV, snowmobile, or other suitable vehicles.
Maintain Maine Public credit card and purchasing authority for supplies, repairs, fuel, and maintenance of vehicles and equipment; keep accurate recordkeeping for budgeting.
Assist in setting up, operating, and taking down remote broadcasts.
Conduct grounds and building maintenance such as mowing lawns, bush hogging, weed whacking, brush cutting, and generator upkeep.
Provide 24‑7 on‑call technical support on a rotational basis for rapid restoration of technical emergencies that could impair broadcast transmissions.
Requirements
Demonstrated hands‑on experience with RF equipment or related technical fields, at least three years of related work experience.
High school diploma or GED.
General maintenance and repair skills, experience with hand tools, electronics troubleshooting and repair.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Regular travel throughout Maine, ability to operate snowmobiles, ATVs, or similar vehicles.
Valid driver’s license and pre‑employment criminal background check.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate’s degree or comparable formal training in electrical or computer related study.
Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) certification.
Experience with high‑power RF equipment and broadcast transmitter experience.
Knowledge and experience in FCC rules and regulations.
Comprehensive IT skills.
