Apple Inc. is hiring: Camera Calibration & Instrumentation Engineer in San Diego
Apple Inc., San Diego, CA, United States
Camera Calibration & Instrumentation Engineer Apple builds consumer electronics that have touched millions and changed the way people get along with electronic devices around the world. These products have cameras and other optical technologies that need calibration and testing to ensure the customer experience we want to deliver. The HWTE group is responsible for developing technologies, calibration methodologies, and instrumentation for the calibration and testing of every single Apple product before it leaves the factory. These solutions will be developed during New Product Introduction (NPI) before they are scaled by the operations team.
Description The camera team is looking for a calibration & instrumentation engineer to define and develop calibration and test strategies for new camera components. You will be responsible for specification, design, prototyping, validation, and optimization of test metrology and algorithms for camera testing and calibration during Apple’s new product introduction (NPI). You will work in close collaboration with Optical Sensor & Camera Design groups within Apple to ensure the success of the current and future Apple products.
Responsibilities Define end-to-end camera calibration and test strategies, and design/develop instrumentation and metrology to enable them.
Design, prototype, and validate new metrology in the lab to ensure design readiness for NPI builds.
Collaborate with design, algorithm, and operations teams to align on calibration requirements and coverage for new camera systems.
Define spec trees by breaking down feature-level requirements into measurable parameters. Evaluate sensitivity to individual parameter accuracy, and set spec limits accordingly.
Use simulation and synthetic data to evaluate calibration adaptability and edge-case performance.
Analyze factory build data to evaluate GR&R capability, extract key performance trends, and perform failure mode analysis. Design experiments to drive root-cause analysis and propose corrective actions.
Establish specifications and tolerances for key components and qualify equipment vendors to meet quality control requirements.
Optimize calibration and test methodologies to achieve mass production efficiency targets.
Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and strategy to enhance team capabilities/deliveries.
Minimum Qualifications BS in EE/CS/CE/Physics/Optics or related technical field
3+ years of relevant confirmed experience
In-depth knowledge of camera/optical system working principles
Experience with camera and optical sensor calibration techniques and metrology
Very strong interpersonal skills with ability to deliver technical and executive-level presentations
System engineering approach to quickly familiarize yourself with sophisticated processes (example factory infrastructure, mechanical design, algorithms and SW deployment)
Effective in breaking down and prioritizing between many sophisticated tasks
Programming experience in Python or Matlab
Preferred Qualifications MS in EE/CS/CE/Physics/Optics or related technical field
Experience with driving AI/ML projects
Experience with fabrication and assembly of camera and optical sensors
Experience with computer vision algorithms and image processing
Experience with plotting, processing and mining data
Experience with simulation workflows and synthetic dataset generation
Programming experience in C, C++ or Objective C
