JOB DESCRIPTION

Flexible – New York.
Expected Duration
6 months.
Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is unpaid and may be either full‑time (35 hours per week) or part‑time (20 hours per week). It can be undertaken remotely or in a hybrid arrangement at the UN premises in New York. The intern reports to the Director of the Security Sector Reform Unit and may work in person or remotely depending on request.
Prepare and conduct media outreach activities.
Support the production, editing and communication of SSRU digital content.
Assist in drafting communications materials including social media posts and blogs.
Manage the SSRU website and publish approved content.
Update and maintain the SSRU social media presence on all major platforms.
Organise photo banks, mailing lists and archival content.
Produce media digests on SSR activities.
Support communication‑based activities, including virtual events and visual communication.
Advise SSRU on strategic communication.
Gather, research, analyse and present information from various sources.
Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications / Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
Have a field of study closely related to the internship.
Be a student in the final year of a first university degree (Bachelor), Master’s or Ph.D. programme, or have completed one of these degrees.
Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Teams. Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts, design surveys and polls.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Official UN languages include Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
