Position Summary
The Department of Communication and Media Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at North Central College invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track Lecturer position in Communication – Public Speaking/Generalist, to begin Fall 2026.
Duties and Responsibilities
Primarily teach introduction to public speaking, a core first-year general education course for all undergraduates. Qualified candidates may have the opportunity to teach other courses that serve the department’s communication and media studies curriculum.
Provide instruction for six in-person courses, carrying a teaching load of 24 credits per academic year. Lecturers teach a 3-3 course load across fall and spring semesters.
Assess student work and provide constructive and timely feedback on how to improve students’ content knowledge, critical thinking skills, research abilities, and oral and written communication skills, etc.
Mentor first-year undergraduate students to successfully acclimate to the College.
Build, maintain and keep current course Canvas sites.
Hold office hours and be present on campus for a considerable time each week.
Attend College workshops and professional development opportunities related to the first-year curriculum; engage with the Center for Faculty Excellence and the Communication and Media Studies faculty to further develop teaching and mentoring skills; complete campus-wide training required by the Offices of Academic Affairs and Human Resources.
Perform departmental service activities, including attending department meetings and events, supporting assessment efforts, and participating in committees, task forces, and other duties as assigned. Participate in College governance by attending meetings of the College of Arts and Sciences and the faculty at large.
Basic Qualifications
Master’s degree in Communication
Significant experience teaching public speaking at the college level
Demonstrated excellence in teaching
Salary Range
The budgeted salary range for this position is $50,000 to $54,000.
