Symetra's Individual Life Division is seeking a collaborative and resultsdriven Manager, Life Underwriting to lead a team supporting our National Marketing Organization (NMO) partners. This role is ideal for an experienced underwriting leader who is passionate about people development, customer experience, and business growth-especially within digital and modern underwriting environments.
About the role
As Manager of Life Underwriting, you will lead and develop a team of underwriters supporting core life insurance products, including Symetra's awardwinning Swift Digital application process. You'll balance technical expertise with people leadership, ensuring profitable growth, strong partner relationships, and a highquality customer experience.
What you will do
- Lead and develop underwriters
- Hire, train, coach, and develop a highperforming underwriting team.
- Serve as an escalation and referral resource, applying advanced underwriting judgment and authority.
- Provide regular feedback, coaching, and performance guidance to support individual and team growth.
- Drive underwriting quality and results
- Analyze underwriting data, key metrics, and business trends to identify improvement opportunities.
- Recommend and implement action plans that support profitable, compliant, and customerfocused outcomes.
- Review complex cases and recommend appropriate coverage, pricing, and alternatives.
- Build strong partnerships
- Develop trusted relationships with brokers, NMOs, and internal partners.
- Collaborate across teams to support business development, retention, and service excellence.
- Ensure compliance and consistency
- Maintain adherence to regulatory requirements, underwriting guidelines, and internal standards.
- Conduct audits, reviews, and quality checks to ensure accuracy and consistency.

Compensation
Salary Range: $106,400 - $177,300 plus eligibility for annual bonus program
Who You Are
- 6+ years of Life underwriting experience.
- Prior leadership or teamlead experience guiding professionals through complex, customerfocused work preferred.
- Strong underwriting judgment, analytical skills, and attention to detail.
- Passionate about coaching, mentoring, and developing people.
- Organized, adaptable, and comfortable managing multiple priorities.
- Clear, confident communicator who builds trust and collaborates effectively.
- Willingness and ability to travel periodically for business needs and leadership development activities.
- College degree preferred, high school diploma required.
Travel:
Required Training & Professional Development
All newly hired people leaders with direct reportsare required tocomplete a comprehensive leadership development program within their first year. This program includes both virtual and in-person training. The in-person sessions will take place at Symetra's corporate headquarters in Bellevue, Washington.Symetra covers all travel and accommodation expenses.
