JOB SUMMARY
MSC is seeking an experienced HVAC Design Engineer to lead design/build and retrofit project development. This is a technical role focused on originating and developing custom mechanical solutions for building owners in commercial, industrial, and institutional settings. The ideal candidate possesses the technical depth to assess existing conditions in the field, develop viable mechanical solutions, produce clear design documentation, and prepare accurate estimates covering equipment, materials, and labor.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Design & Engineering
Conduct site surveys of existing mechanical systems to assess conditions and define project scope
Develop original HVAC and process cooling system designs for commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities, with the ability to define scope and solutions independently where no plans or specifications exist
Perform load calculations and equipment sizing using industry-standard tools
Select appropriate equipment and specify systems, including air handling units, chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, piping, controls, and related components
Produce design drawings, schematics, and supporting documentation sufficient to define scope and support installation
Estimating and Proposal Development
Prepare detailed project estimates encompassing equipment, materials, and labor
Develop clear, professional proposals tailored to direct-to-owner sales opportunities
Collaborate with the sales team to present and refine proposals as needed
Project Coordination & Technical Support
Transition awarded projects to operations and field teams with thorough documentation and handoff
Provide ongoing technical support to field and office teams during project execution
Conduct site visits as needed to verify conditions and support installation
QUALIFICATIONS
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent combination of technical education and field experience
5-10 years of experience in HVAC design/build work in commercial, industrial, or institutional environments
Demonstrated ability to develop mechanical system solutions without existing plans or specifications
Proficiency in load calculation and equipment selection software (HAP, Trace 700, or equivalent)
Experience producing design drawings using CAD or similar tools
Strong estimating skills, with the ability to accurately quantify equipment, material, and labor costs
Solid working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including ASHRAE and local mechanical codes
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Resourceful, self-directed, and comfortable managing multiple priorities simultaneously
Professional Engineer (PE) license a plus, but not required
SALARY & BENEFITS
Salary $140,000 - $160,000
