
Design Architect - Federal Practice

GPD is seeking a Design Architect for the Houston, TX office to support our Federal practice.
Position Summary
As a Federal Design Architect, you will be an integral component of our Architecture/Engineering Practice. You will design and document a broad range of project types, preparing full design packages through the Conceptual Design, Schematic Design, Design Development, and Construction Document phases. You should demonstrate creative problem‑solving, organizational skills, independence, strong production management, and a good understanding of design preparation and constructability.
Key Responsibilities
In partnership with the Lead Architect and Designers, support the planning and architectural design of federal and government projects, developing design documents.
Assist the lead architect with code research, programming, design, documentation, specifications, narratives, and construction administration, including field visits.
Research agency standards and requirements for design compliance.
Research design solutions and industry best practices.
Show creative problem‑solving, strong organization, production management, and a solid understanding of construction documents.
Coordinate with all design disciplines, including in‑house or sub‑consultant engineers and designers.
Conduct building assessments and surveys.
Review, coordinate, and refine work produced by yourself and project team members to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Develop 3D visualizations to facilitate design reviews and intent.
Support Quality Assurance/Quality Control reviews to verify deliverables meet quality, accuracy, and federal client requirements.
Support construction administration, including review of shop drawings and coordination.
Mentor and support entry‑level architects.
Travel may be required.
Education and Experience
Bachelor of Architecture (5‑year program) or Master of Architecture (6‑year program) from a NAAB‑accredited institution.
Minimum 4-6 years of job‑related experience.
Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience developing design documents through schematic design, design development, construction documents, specifications, and supporting projects through construction administration.
Intermediate to advanced CAD and Revit/BIM skills.
Experience working directly with the project architect to provide timely project status updates.
Ability to work within a team environment with individuals from various offices and disciplines.
Excellent communication, professional writing, and multitasking skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
