Senior Highway Design Engineer

What You Will Do
GFT is seeking a Senior Highway Design Engineer to join our Transportation Team in Chicago, IL and Schaumburg, IL. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance at our Chicagoland, IL offices. GFT’s Transportation team offers the opportunity to engage in transformative projects that enhance transportation infrastructure and improve community connectivity, including highways, bridges, traffic engineering, and resilient, sustainable design.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in plan preparation, quantity calculations, geometric design, pavement marking/signage, drainage design, traffic studies, traffic signal design, public involvement, report writing, specifications, cost estimates, and related tasks.
Use OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, MS Office and other design software in collaboration with engineers, technicians, planners, and surveyors.
Participate in multi‑disciplinary projects and occasionally field data collection.
Receive instructions from Project Managers or Senior Project Engineers and report progress, schedule changes, or scope additions.
Research design options and document findings for Senior Project Engineers, keeping Senior Project Managers informed.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) from an ABET‑accredited school.
3–6 years of professional experience in design or plan production related to transportation engineering.
Proficiency with OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, and Geopak.
Certified E.I.T. or ability to obtain licensure within six months.
Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work well in team environments.
Demonstrated ability to solve design issues independently and manage ownership of work.
What We Prefer You Bring
Roadway or transportation‑related design and plan production experience within Illinois.
Basic 3‑D modeling skills and familiarity with OpenRoads Designer.
Experience with Bluebeam Revu.
PE license preferred.
