
Mechanical Design Engineer (Mechanisms)

Role Overview
The Mechanical Design Engineer plays a critical role in the development of Latitude’s hard-goodsproduct line. This engineer will focus on mechanisms, mechanical systems, and functional assemblies, contributing to the full product lifecycle from concept through production. The ideal candidate is a hands‑on problem solver with strong 3D CAD skills, a deep understanding of mechanical design principles, and experience designing for manufacturability.You will work closely with senior engineering leadership, product management, and sourcing partners to bring innovative, durable, and field‑ready products to life.
Key Responsibilities
Develop detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and engineering drawings using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD,orFusion 360
Design mechanisms, linkages, and moving systems with an emphasis on reliability and manufacturability
Apply GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and engineering best practices
Support structural and mechanical simulations (FEA, motion studies, load analysis)
Interpret simulation results and translate them into design improvements
Build and evaluate prototypes using in‑house tools and external partners
Conduct functional testing, failure analysis, and iterative refinement
Document test results and propose engineering solutions
Work with suppliers to ensure manufacturability, cost efficiency, and quality
Support DFM and DFA activities across plastics, metals, and composite processes
Participate in design reviews and technical discussions with vendors
Maintain engineering documentation, revision control, and BOM accuracy
Collaborate with product managers, sourcing, and soft goods teams to align on requirements
Support project timelines and deliverables across multiple concurrent programs
Qualifications
2–4years of mechanical design engineering experience
Strongproficiencyin at least one major 3D CAD platform (Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD&Fusion 360preferred)
Experience designing mechanisms, linkages, and mechanical systems
Familiarity with structural analysis and simulation tools (FEA, motion/multibody analysis)
Understanding of DFM/DFA for plastics, metals, and composite manufacturing
Hands‑on prototyping and testing experience
Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills
Passion for the outdoors and building high‑performance gear
Location & Work Format
This role will be based at our headquarters in Grand Rapids, MI. The expectation is to be onsite in our design studio for a minimum of 3 days per week. Remote focus work for enhancing personal productivity can beleveraged1-2 days per week whereappropriate. Experienced candidates can be provided with up to3months of remote work before transitioning to Grand Rapids to allow for an earlier start date.
