Highway Engineering Department Manager
Location: Virginia (Hybrid/On-Site Options Available)
A well-established and growing civil engineering firm in Virginia is seeking an experienced Highway Engineering Department Manager to lead and expand its transportation practice. This is a senior leadership role for a motivated engineer who enjoys combining technical excellence, team leadership, and client engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage the Highway/Transportation Engineering Department, including staff development, mentoring, and performance management
Oversee planning, design, and delivery of roadway and highway projects for VDOT, local municipalities, and regional agencies
Serve as Engineer of Record and provide technical oversight on roadway geometry, drainage, traffic control, and safety improvements
Manage project budgets, schedules, and quality control standards
Collaborate with firm leadership on strategic growth, proposals, and business development
Maintain strong relationships with VDOT, local agencies, and key clients
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Master’s preferred)
Professional Engineer (PE) license in Virginia (or ability to obtain)
10+ years of highway/roadway design experience, including VDOT projects
Prior experience managing teams and leading transportation projects
Strong knowledge of VDOT standards, AASHTO, and roadway design software
Proven communication, leadership, and client-facing skills
