Performs product and component management to ensure technical viability and cost‑effectiveness from the point where it is evaluated through implementation and support, to retirement. Uses technical expertise to help business partners and others by answering technical questions regarding the usage, trouble‑shooting and functionality of delivery systems products to ensure effective implementation and usage of delivery system products. Applies knowledge of computing systems to choose appropriate troubleshooting techniques to resolve complex, escalated delivery systems problems. Works with appropriate product supplier for enhancements and issues not resolved in‑house. Chooses appropriate computing products and methods to ensure requirements are met for security, problem management, capacity/performance management and operational management. Documents resolutions/analyses according to support procedures. The Skype for Business Decommissioning Specialist is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing the successful retirement of Skype for Business infrastructure in alignment with organizational communication strategy. This role ensures a smooth transition to the target collaboration platform (e.g., Microsoft Teams), while minimizing business disruption, preserving compliance, and retiring legacy systems securely. The specialist will lead technical discovery, stakeholder coordination, risk mitigation, and execution activities related to the decommissioning lifecycle, including documentation, user readiness, system shutdown, and post‑decommission validation.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct full Skype for Business environment assessment, including topology, dependencies, integrations, and usage patterns
Develop a detailed decommissioning plan aligned with business, security, and compliance requirements
Coordinate with IT, security, compliance, networking, and business stakeholders
Validate migration readiness (users, voice, conferencing, compliance, integrations)
Execute controlled shutdown of Skype for Business services and infrastructure
Manage voice, conferencing, and federation dependencies
Ensure data retention, archiving, and compliance obligations are met
Decommission and/or repurpose servers, certificates, DNS records, firewall rules, and monitoring tools
Produce and maintain technical documentation and runbooks
Provide post‑decommission validation and support
Identify risks and implement mitigation strategies throughout the project
Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical Skills
Deep expertise in Skype for Business (Online and/or Server)
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Teams migration and coexistence modes
Experience with Enterprise Voice, PSTN connectivity, SBCs, and call routing
Familiarity with Active Directory, Azure AD, and Microsoft 365
Understanding of DNS, certificates, firewalls, and network dependencies
Experience with PowerShell scripting for Microsoft UC platforms
Knowledge of compliance, eDiscovery, retention, and audit requirements
Professional Skills
Proven experience leading enterprise decommissioning or migration projects
Strong project management and documentation skills
Excellent stakeholder communication and coordination abilities
Risk assessment and change management experience
Ability to work independently and within cross‑functional teams
Preferred Qualifications
Microsoft UC or Teams certifications
Experience in regulated environments (government, education, healthcare, enterprise)
Prior experience decommissioning other legacy collaboration platforms
