Job Description
Summary
The Drafting & Design Teacher will lead a project-based classroom where students learn to bridge the gap between digital concepts and physical prototypes. The instructor is responsible for teaching architectural and mechanical design principles using industry-standard software and maintaining a modern fabrication lab. This role emphasizes critical thinking, spatial reasoning, and the "Maker" mindset.
This position is for the 2026-2027 school year.
Responsibilities
Design and implement a multi-level drafting program that covers:
Mechanical Design: 3D modeling and assembly using SolidWorks .
Architectural Design: Residential and commercial floor planning in Revit .
Technical Sketching: Manual drafting fundamentals and AutoCAD precision drawing.
Integrate "Digital Fabrication" units where students export designs to:
Cura: For 3D printing components on LulzBot and Creality machines.
LightBurn: For precision cutting and engraving on the BossLaser .
Manage the "Design Lab" ecosystem, ensuring all equipment is calibrated and functional.
Troubleshooting: Perform routine maintenance on 3D printer extruders, bed leveling, and laser focal alignment.
Media Management: Oversee the operation of the Canon 36" printer , including loading heavy‑duty bond paper rolls and managing high‑volume plot queues for blueprints and posters.
Safety: Maintain a rigorous safety certification program for all students using the laser and 3D printing equipment.
Encourage student participation in the MITES (Michigan Industrial and Technology Education Society) annual competitions and regional craft fairs.
Assist students in building digital portfolios for college admissions (Architecture, Engineering, or Design schools).
Foster a collaborative environment through "Design Challenges" that require cross‑platform software use.
Qualifications
Bachelors Degree in Education, Industrial Arts, Technology Education or a related field
Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate IX or TE
Standard secondary teaching certificate with significant hobbyist or professional experience in CAD/3D printing
Work experience that qualifies candidates for ACA certification
CAD/BIM: High proficiency in AutoCAD , SolidWorks , and Revit .
Fabrication Software: Functional knowledge of Cura (slicing) and LightBurn (vector/raster processing).
Hardware: Familiarity with the mechanics of FDM 3D printing (Creality/LulzBot) and CO2 Laser operation (BossLaser).
Adaptive Learner: Willingness to stay current with software updates and emerging "Maker" technologies.
Organizational Skills: Ability to manage consumable supplies (filament, plywood, acrylic, ink, and paper rolls).
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from the community, regulatory agencies or staff members.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, and ledgers. Basic Algebra and computation skills to work with the systems and programs required.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
