The High School Patient Care Intern (HSPCI) completes patient care activities and provides clerical support as delegated by the RN
What You Will Do- Hospitality Rounds
Water pitcher with fresh water and ice (confirm with RN that ok for pt to drink)
Ask if would like another blanket
Incentive spirometer at bedside (confirm with RN that pt needs one)
Tissues within reach
Personnel equipment within reach (phone, walker, shoes/slippers, robe, glasses, hearing aids, dentures)
Ask if would like coffee/tea/food (confirm with RN before offering)
Help patient order meals
Distribute patient mail and newspaper
Clean-up room:
? Pick up garbage on floor
? Declutter by putting things away
? Small trash bag on bedside table - Companion Role
Converse with patient
Use activity cart for delirious patient - AM Care Set-Up (partner with UAP to determine which patients need which supplies)
Distribute linen pack to every room (unit specific)
Distribute supplies for bath (warm wipes, toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, razor, shaving cream) - Admission
Set-up empty room for admission (unit specific) - Restock
Warming cabinet with bath wipes; rotate stock
Yellow isolation caddies
Patient Room

Greet visitors
Answer the phone
Answer the intercom - When patient discharged, carry patient belongings to curbside
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
- For specific duties and responsibilities, refer to documentation provided by the department during orientation.
- Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
QualificationsEducation
- Current High School student (rising Senior/Senior) who has completed one year of Health Tech education or a participant of another Workforce Development identified program. (Required) and
- Work Permit Required for students under the age of 18 (Required)
- less than 1 year Entry-level position
- Basic patient care skills. (Preferred proficiency)
- Effective communication with people from varied socioeconomic backgrounds. (Required proficiency)
- Able to organize changing work assignments. (Required proficiency)

- Positive, can-do attitude; self-motivated and willing to learn. (Required proficiency)
