Overview Transmission Line Design Engineer – Production & Contract Support (Birmingham) — multiple positions. Southern Company Services Technical Shared Services – Transmission Line Design Engineering. We are open to considering all levels of experience, provided you meet the basic qualifications outlined below. Available Positions: Line Design Production Engineer (Birmingham, AL); Line Design Contract Support Engineer (Birmingham, AL).
Work Location, Schedule & Travel Based out of Birmingham, AL.
Work schedule: in-office/in-the-field four days per week and one day telecommute (subject to future adjustment).
Some relocation assistance may be provided if the candidate does not live within a reasonable commute distance.
Occasional travel (day and overnight, up to 25%) and ability to work in a remote/virtual environment with reliable internet access.
Job Summaries Line Design Production Engineer — Responsible for applying Southern Company’s engineering processes, design criteria, and software applications in the design and construction support of high-voltage transmission lines (HVTL). Responsibilities include structure location, material selection, wire tension, structure framing, structural analysis, foundation coordination, environmental impact mitigation, NESC electrical clearances, and optimization for constructability and maintenance based on stakeholder feedback. On-the-job training and company-provided formal training will be provided. Prepare design options, construction specifications and drawings, and support project estimate preparation. Design packages support construction of new lines and upgrades, strengthening the Southern Company grid, including potential work for new customers such as data centers, manufacturers, battery plants, and renewable interconnections.
Line Design Contract Support Engineer — Performs duties similar to the Production Engineer with added guidance, oversight, and quality assurance for Southern Company-approved contractors as they develop design solutions, cost estimates, and construction packages for outsourced line design projects. Serves as a liaison among internal customers, construction, and contractors to ensure projects are completed on schedule and coordinates with other area leads to develop best practices and ensure document consistency between Production and Contracts teams.
Job Responsibilities (Both Positions) Create a safe work environment with a focus on Safety First.
Provide engineering support to construction and maintenance teams during day-to-day operations and emergency restoration of failed equipment.
Learn the process used at Southern Company for planning, design, operation, construction, and maintenance of HVTL.
Understand the functions of internal departments involved in HVTL design, construction, and maintenance.
Proficiency in the software applications used in HVTL design.
Support development of design standards and criteria for the Southern Company transmission system.
Serve as a damage assessment team member after major storms (overnight travel within the Southern Company system).
Communicate effectively with stakeholders in writing and orally while developing design solutions.
Qualifications Education
BS degree or higher in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required.
Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical preferred.
A Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
Experience
Previous transmission line design, routing, survey or maintenance experience is a plus.
Understanding of structural, civil, or mechanical engineering concepts, structural analysis, soils and foundations, mechanics of materials, and electrical properties is a plus.
Previous distribution design, engineering, survey, maintenance, construction, or project management experience in the utility industry is a plus.
Linear project design experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of HVTL design, construction, and maintenance practices with expertise in line design and construction materials is a plus.
Technical ability to solve civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering problems related to HVTL; reading and applying design criteria and regulations (NESC is a plus).
Proficiency with standard office software and HVTL application software; experience with PLS-CADD/PLS-POLE a plus; mechanical or structural analysis software a plus.
Interpersonal and time-management skills to manage multiple projects and communicate with stakeholders effectively.
Ability to adapt to changing project demands and timelines; written and verbal communication skills to complete project documentation and collaborate in a team environment.
Ability to work long hours during periods of power restoration after major storms is a plus.
