Under the supervision of the principal and the assistant principal for academics, the librarian supervises all use of the library; maintains the library as a place for academic study for students, staff and class groups; promotes library use for research by providing updated materials in all sections and staying current with technological advancements; assists in preparation of the library budget and monitors the finances throughout the year; trains and supervises the volunteer library staff; coordinates the use of the library and computer commons throughout the year and determines and approves the correct usage of the facility; performs any other job-related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the principal.

Duties

Strives to achieve the goals of Catholic education; shows evidence of knowledge of the Catholic philosophy of education; promotes gospel values and Catholic moral teaching; upholds the doctrinal teachings of the Catholic Church; provides opportunities for the students to be prepared for life in today’s Church and society.

Supervises use of the library as a place for students to study, read, and conduct research; instructs classes and individual students in the use of the library; promotes student research by providing updated materials in all sections and staying current with technological advancements; keeps a record of the number of students using the library, the average number of titles checked per day, the number of library holdings on hand, and other significant statistics; conducts periodic perusal and updating of the school library collection, discarding titles determined beyond repair, outdated, or of little current or future interest.

Assists the faculty in becoming effective information users and helps to structure a learning environment that allows for access to multiple resources in the library, and beyond the school walls; provides leadership and expertise to the classroom teacher to plan, design, deliver, and evaluate instruction using a variety of resources; helps prepare teachers to use electronic resources for information gathering including, but not limited to, computer databases and internet resources.

Assists in the preparation of the annual budget; carries out ongoing selection procedures for the purchase of library materials and equipment within budget limitations, based on recommendations from staff, administration, and students and based on personal research; assumes responsibility for the selection, acquisition, processing, and servicing of books and other library materials needed for the curricular and co‑curricular programs of the school; periodically consults with administration to insure the availability of professional materials in each subject area; keeps abreast of new trends and improvements in library service (including technology) through research, reading professional journals, and attendance at professional meetings; encourages private, group, or institutional donations of funds, usable materials, and equipment to the school, in a manner to be approved by the administration.

Coordinates the use of the library throughout the year and determines and approves the correct usage of the facility; keeps staff, administration, parents, and students informed of any significant additions or changes in the library policies or holdings; maintains an accurate, current catalog of all library holdings.

Trains and supervises the volunteer library aides; strives for professional growth through membership and participation in professional organizations, reading of current literature in the field and participation in appropriate seminars; maintains communication with colleagues.

Works with the IT Director in developing the E‑Library service through local public library systems for students to access.

Organizes and coordinates the SLE Program with the help of the SLE committee on campus.

Coordinates the used book fair, as well as the Scholastic Book Fair each year.

Works with the scheduling for all longitudinal studies on campus through the library.

Leads the inventorying and reordering of textbooks for the school each year through the teachers and administration.

Serves as the faculty advisor for the yearbook committee in assisting creation, ordering and distribution of books.

Maintains teacher resource materials in the library and assists teachers with developing electronic resources for their classroom.

Performs any other job‑related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the principal.

Required Qualifications

Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science or a related field.

Must be certified by the Arizona State Department of Education as a teacher.

Must meet Ministry Formation Certification as required by Diocesan Policy.

Must be in good physical condition.

Must have initiative, creativity, and problem‑solving skills; judgment in handling different personalities and emerging situations; an ability to observe and actively listen in assessing individual student, teacher, and program needs, proficiency in good communication skills with both children and adults; positive attitude in crisis situations; ability to work cooperatively with others as well as ability to delegate.

Must have knowledge and understanding of good teaching techniques and child psychology.
