Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive legal and legislative reference services to customers.

Solve complex problems involving relationships among different library reference functions.

Provide training and public awareness to customers regarding US Department of Justice legal and legislative library programs and services.

Design, configure, implement, and evaluate automated library systems to improve services.

Create and update material for library websites, ensuring adherence to all Department guidelines.

Advise and train experienced librarians on new and emerging library technologies, references, or related information.

Conditions of Employment

U.S. citizen or national.

Complete pre‑employment security investigation and drug screening.

May be required to complete a one‑year probationary period.

Selective Service registration required for male applicants born on or after December 31, 1959, with approved exemption on file.

Qualifications
Basic Requirement

Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science at an accredited institution plus all work required for a bachelor's degree, OR

A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college‑level education, training, and experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of professional librarianship, literature resources, and essential library and information services.

Specialized Knowledge Requirements

Full 4‑year undergraduate program including at least 24 semester hours in law or law‑related coursework, OR

Completion of at least 24 semester hours of legal study in an accredited law school, OR

Four years of pertinent experience equivalent to a 4‑year law curriculum with related knowledge of legal principles, research techniques, and literature resources.

Specialized Experience

For GS‑12: at least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the GS‑11 level or equivalent, including developing legal resources directories, providing instructional services, and preparing acquisition justifications.

For GS‑13: at least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the GS‑12 level or equivalent, including technical support for electronic library systems, scheduling and coordinating operations, and recommending solutions to improve collections.

Foreign Education : Education completed in foreign institutions may be used if proven equivalent to U.S. education standards. Documentation must be in English or include an English translation.
