The San José Public Library (SJPL) is an award‑winning library with more than 600 employees, 23% bilingual staff, and 24 branch libraries across San José, plus the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. SJPL serves a diverse community of roughly one million residents, with nearly 700,000 library members and an annual visitor count of over 6 million (pre‑pandemic) while circulating more than 8 million items per year.
Position Duties
We are hiring one (1) Librarian I/II full‑time position and two (2) Librarian I/II part‑time positions (20 hours per week). Part‑time duties will include evening shifts, Saturday rotations, and Sunday rotations. Candidates will support the mission, vision, and values of the City and the Library, provide customer service, uphold intellectual freedom, and use current library technology and trends. Programming responsibilities include story time, school and community engagement, outreach, coding and STEAM activities, and volunteer coordination. Bilingual skills are preferred.
Responsibilities
- Provide excellent customer service and respond to patron needs.
- Plan and implement programming for all ages, including story time, school partnership, and community engagement.
- Support outreach activities to promote library services.
- Develop and implement coding and STEAM programs for diverse audiences.
- Engage and coordinate volunteers to enhance library operations.
Qualifications
- Librarian I: Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited institution.
- Librarian II: Master’s Degree in Library Science and at least one year of professional library experience.
