Research Librarian for Engineering


The University of California, Irvine Libraries seeks an energetic, creative, knowledgeable, and user-oriented Research Librarian to serve as liaison to the Samueli School of Engineering, which includes the six engineering departments: Biomedical Engineering, Chemical & Biology Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Materials Science & Engineering, and Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering.


Key Responsibilities



  • Serve as liaison between the university libraries and the engineering departments, fostering collaboration and supporting research, teaching, and learning.

  • Develop and conduct information literacy instruction tailored to engineering and STEM disciplines.

  • Collaborate on open‑access and data‑management initiatives, and support scholarship across engineering fields.

  • Assist faculty, staff, and students in locating, evaluating, and applying scholarly resources, including engineering standards, technical reports, and patents.

  • Support community building and partnerships for learning and student success.


Qualifications



  • Graduate degree in library science from an ALA‑accredited institution or equivalent combination of advanced degree and library experience.

  • Educational background and/or library experience in engineering or applied science.

  • Knowledge of engineering or applied science disciplines, research methods, scholarly communication, and resources used in STEM fields.

  • Experience teaching information literacy in higher education for engineering or STEM disciplines.

  • Demonstrated interest in working with students and faculty and commitment to user‑centered library services.

  • Strong interest in open access and data‑management policies.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and inclusively across UC Irvine Libraries and campus.

  • Ability to meet the University of California criteria for advancement and promotion.

  • Preferred: Familiarity with engineering standards, technical reports, or patents.

  • Preferred: Understanding of engineering collection development or scholarly communication.

  • Preferred: Background in generative AI, data analysis, or emerging technologies supporting engineering research.

  • Preferred: Experience building partnerships to enhance learning and student success.


Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience, based on the University of California pay scales. Appointment is anticipated to be at the Assistant Librarian, Associate Librarian, or Librarian rank with a salary of $72,224–$102,121.
