Job Description
The State Library of Iowa is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable individual to serve as a District Library Consultant for the Southeast District of the Library Support Network. This fully remote position requires regular driving within the district and occasional travel to the State Library offices in Des Moines. The ideal candidate must reside within or nearby the Southeast District and be a resident of the state of Iowa. The consultant reports to the Library Program Director.

What You'll Do

Provide expert consulting to local library staff and trustees on all facets of library management, including collection management, public services, technology, funding, policies, board relations, personnel management, library buildings, and planning.

Collaborate on and deliver statewide continuing education and training programs through online classes, in-person workshops, roundtables, and user groups.

Support Statewide Library Programs by providing guidance and training on key statewide programs such as SILO Locator, Interlibrary Loan, Annual Survey, Endorsement, Standards and Accreditation, Enrich Iowa, Bridges, and other State Library online resources.

Build and maintain relationships by visiting sites, communicating via phone and email, and delivering new library director orientations.

Document, track, and monitor the development of libraries within the district, report progress and challenges, serve on State Library teams, and work on special projects or initiatives.

Set up and troubleshoot technology for remote and in-person presentations, and accommodate occasional overnight travel and work during evenings and weekends.

Deep knowledge of library management principles, current best practices, and library services.

Exceptional communication and presentation skills, enabling effective written and verbal training.

Proven consulting and problem‑solving ability to resolve governance, fiscal responsibility, and operational challenges.

Technological proficiency to set up, operate, and troubleshoot laptops, presentation equipment, and remote networking tools.

Strong relationship‑building skills to work with local library personnel, trustees, city government, and State Library colleagues.

Organizational and reporting skills for documenting, tracking, and reporting library development.

Flexibility and adaptability to travel and adjust work hours to accommodate evenings and weekends.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in library science and five years of full‑time professional experience in a public, school, academic, special library, or library system.

Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in library science and six years of full‑time professional experience in a public, school, academic, special library, or library system.

An equivalent combination of experience and education, substituting one year of required experience for each year of required education (30 semester hours or one year), up to a maximum substitution of four years.
