GENERAL PURPOSE
Working under the supervision of a Division Manager, this position provides support for general, routine clerk duties as needed to assist delivery of public library services for the City. Clerks are assigned to work in one of several divisions (Circulation Services, Technical Services, Adult Services, Teen Services), with the responsibilities of each of these divisions outlined below.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Circulation Services:
- Attends patron services desks,
- Greets patrons and assists with requests;
- Registers patrons for library cards and instructs them on library policies and procedures;
- Assists patrons in locating books and material and providing reference services;
- Collects fines and fees from patrons;
- Checks out library materials;
- Locates items that are on hold;
- Monitors their assigned area of the library, including organizing and tidying up public spaces and shelved materials, and addressing behavioral issues;
- Provides basic assistance to patrons using public computers, printers, and copiers;
- Checks in library materials and inspects for damage;
- Assists with library book sales;
- Answers and directs incoming text messages and emails;
- Schedule: This position is required to work at least one evening each week and at least one Saturday per month;
Technical Services:
- Checks in library materials and inspects for damage;
- Identifies books and other materials needing repairs;
- Repairs books and materials as needed;
- Prepares new materials for circulation;
- Answers and directs incoming phone calls;
- Answers basic patron questions about library policies and procedures, accounts, room reservations, and library programs;
- Schedule: Regularly scheduled clerks are required to work at least 12 hours each week. Substitute clerks work every other Saturday and substitute for other clerks as needed.;
Teen & Adult Services:
- Attends the Teen & Adult Services desk;
- Greets patrons and assists with requests;
- Assists patrons in locating books and material and providing reference services;
- Instructs patrons on library policies and procedures;
- Assists patrons using public computers, copiers, or printers;
- Collects fines and fees from patrons;
- Checks out library materials;
- Monitors their assigned area of the library, including organizing and tidying up public spaces and shelved materials, and addressing behavioral issues;
- Manages study and conference room use;
- Provides basic assistance to patrons using public computers, printers, copiers, and video game consoles;
- May use graphic-design tools to create advertisements for the division;
- Locates items that are on hold;
- Sets up and maintains displays;
- May assist with teen & adult programming;
- Schedule: This position is required to work at least one evening each week and at least one Saturday per month;
General responsibilities (for all divisions):
- Performs a variety of general clerical and office duties;
- Operates computer for word and information processing;
- Maintains records and files;
- Performs related duties as required;
- Other duties as assigned;
- May be trained to assist with responsibilities in other divisions as needed.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduate or equivalent is required;
- Knowledge of library methods, practices, and procedures; Dewey Decimal system;
- Ability to perform general clerical functions quickly and accurately;
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions and work independently in carrying out work assignments;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees;
- Exhibit excellent customer service when working with patrons of all ages;
- Operate various computers, office machines and equipment;
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
- Must be able to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position;
- Must abide by all City and Library policies and procedures;
- Must work well with others and be a team player;
- Ability to speak Spanish is preferred, though not required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Performs duties that may include physical effort, such as pushing or pulling a loaded book truck, lifting, bending, stooping, climbing, and walking;
- Occasionally may lift/carry materials up to 40 pounds;
- May sit or stand for long periods of time.
