Job Summary
Serving as part of the Access Services team, the position's role is to provide excellent customer service to students, faculty, staff, and the UP community. This position reports to the Access Services Manager and Access Services Evening Supervisor. Students are employed fall and spring semesters and have the opportunity to work summer semesters. Student assistants can also choose to work when the library is open during fall, winter, and spring breaks. Student Assistants for this job application period will begin in the summer or fall of 2026, depending on availability and needs of the library.
Library student employees take shifts at the Service Desk, shelve and shelf-read the collection on the lower level, process incoming and outgoing book requests, and answer questions about the library both in person and over the phone. Training is provided in applicable library processes and software through face-to-face instruction, weekly reminders, and online tutorials to ensure that students are successful in their assigned tasks. We will train you to become familiar with the layout and workings of the library.
Core Duties
Answer questions for patrons at the Service Desk either in-person or via telephone
Check in and out materials
Shelf-read the collection
Re-shelve the collection
Assist in the process of Summit borrowing and lending
Help Circulation staff open and close the library building
Assist with ongoing library projects
Other relevant duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Strong communication skills; represent the library in a professional and courteous manner.
Customer Service Skills or alternate relevant experience working with the public.
Ability to be punctual and consistently work a set schedule selected by student. Hours chosen may take place outside of normal office hours.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of how a library works or prior use of a library.
Aptitude for learning technology quickly.
Physical Requirements
Lift and carry up to 15 lbs.
Maneuver a book cart between bookshelves.
Stoop and crouch, using a step stool as needed.
Must be able to move between multiple building levels.
Ability to sit at computer for long periods of time.
