Join the Beaverton City Library Community Engagement Team as our Summer Reading Intern and get an intro to library work! The Summer Reading Intern is a grant-funded position for a high school intern to help with the Summer Reading Program (SRP), train and oversee teen volunteers, maintain the summer reading books, implement a service project, and plan and facilitate storytimes at an outreach site.

You’ll gain valuable professional library experience while sharing the joy of the Summer Reading Program with kids, teens, and their families.

The intern in this position will have a chance to gain skills in:

Supervisory experience through training and supervising volunteers

Outreach including storytime experience

Programming experience

Customer service and answering questions at a library service desk

Planning and organizational skills

Communication skills within a professional library setting

Knowledge of library workflow, projects, and professional responsibilities

Possible other teaching opportunities available depending on interests

The ideal candidate must be:

Self-motivated and able to work independently

Able to inventory and unpack books

Responsible and dependable

Able to complete tasks in a timely manner

Willing to learn new skills and teach others

Able to work well with people from many backgrounds

Proficient in Microsoft Word

Knowledgeable about other Microsoft Office applications

This is a temporary, part-time internship. It will be scheduled to work 17 hours per week which may include weekend work. The internship will go from June 8 to August 15, 2026.

Train and supervise teen volunteers and coordinate and schedule substitute volunteers.

Assist with the Summer Reading Program, including collecting and organizing SRP statistics and marketing the library’s summer offerings.

Unpack, inventory, and later repack the summer reading books – includes moving small boxes.

Assist with storytimes at a local park.

Perform professional library work under the supervision of a librarian, including:
Outreach to a community partner location

Observe at the library reference desk

Help with collection development for a small part of a library collection

Plan activities for a library program or presenting pop-up programs

Implement a service project over the course of the internship

Complete other projects and perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications

At least 16 years old by June 8, 2026; and

Currently (at time of application) enrolled in high school as a sophomore, junior, or senior.

Wage
$24.56 hourly
