Qualifications
Position Summary
The Music Therapist is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating music therapy services to support the emotional, cognitive, physical, and social needs of individuals or groups. This role uses evidence‑based music therapy interventions to promote therapeutic outcomes while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams and maintaining appropriate clinical documentation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assess clients’ needs, strengths, and therapeutic goals through observation, interviews, and standardized tools

Facilitate music therapy sessions using techniques such as singing, instrument play, music listening, songwriting, and movement

Document therapy sessions, progress notes, evaluations, and treatment plans in accordance with organizational and regulatory standards

Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including healthcare providers, educators, counselors, and family members

Monitor client progress and modify interventions as needed

Maintain therapeutic instruments and materials in safe, working condition

Uphold ethical standards and professional boundaries as defined by relevant credentialing bodies

Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and professional development activities

Educate staff, families, and caregivers on the benefits and appropriate use of music therapy interventions

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Music Therapy from an accredited program

Board Certification as a Music Therapist (MT‑BC) or eligibility to sit for the certification exam

Strong musical proficiency (voice, guitar, piano, or percussion preferred)

Ability to work effectively with diverse populations

Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills

Master’s degree in Music Therapy or related field

Previous experience in a healthcare, educational, behavioral health, or community setting

Experience working with specific populations (e.g., children, older adults, individuals with disabilities, mental health clients)

Familiarity with electronic health records or clinical documentation systems

Physical and Mental Demands

Ability to sit, stand, and move for extended periods during sessions

Ability to transport and use musical instruments

Emotional resilience when working with clients experiencing illness, trauma, or developmental challenges

Work Environment

Clinical, educational, residential, or community‑based setting
