Position: Music Teacher – Chorus
Location: Chelmsford High School
Chelmsford High School is a public high school serving approximately 1,800 students in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Established in 1927, CHS offers rigorous academics, athletics, and a comprehensive arts program. The school has earned the NAMM Foundation's "Best Communities for Music Education" designation each year since 2013, reflecting a strong commitment to the performing arts.
The CHS music department is a high-visibility, collaborative team focused on artistic excellence and student-centered programming. Band, chorus, and orchestra students in grades 5-8 participate in four in-school rehearsals per week, with a culture of commitment extending to high school ensembles. Position Summary
Chelmsford Public Schools seeks a student-centered choral/music educator to serve as the choral director at Chelmsford High School. This is a full-time, high-profile position requiring strong organizational and communication skills, with piano proficiency and a commitment to students. The successful candidate will lead multiple curricular ensembles and teach elective music courses. The position involves regular evening and weekend commitments and participation in the department's biennial travel performance trip.
Instructional Responsibilities
Choral Ensembles
Direct the SSA Treble Choir class following district pacing guides and curriculum frameworks.
Direct the SATB Mixed Choir class following district pacing guides and curriculum frameworks.
Design and implement sequential, standards-aligned instruction to develop vocal technique, music literacy, and ensemble skills.
Select a diverse repertoire representing historical periods, genres, and cultural traditions appropriate to ensemble level and student development.
Prepare ensembles for concerts, adjudicated events, and community performances to high artistic standards.
Conduct regular rehearsals that maximize student engagement and ensemble cohesion.
Additional Course Assignments
Teach Guitar as needed, following district pacing guide.
Teach Exploring Popular Music as needed, following district pacing guide.
Teach Introduction to Acting as needed, following district pacing guide.
Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learners and backgrounds.
Integrate culturally responsive and equity-centered perspectives into instruction.
Professional Responsibilities
Fulfill additional performance and event obligations during and outside of the school day (festivals, community events).
Maintain timely, proactive communication with students, families, and the school community regarding schedules and program updates.
Participate in the Fine and Performing Arts department's biennial travel performance trip, including overnight travel and planning coordination.
Post student assessment updates at a minimum every two weeks using the district's grading platform.
Use common assessments where appropriate, aligned with department and district practices.
Maintain accurate attendance and performance records for curricular and co-curricular groups.
Manage the program budget responsibly per district policies for fundraising, travel, and purchasing.
Participate in building/department meetings, professional development, and curriculum alignment work.
Collaborate with the Fine and Performing Arts Coordinator, building administration, and music department colleagues.
Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or Fine and Performing Arts Coordinator.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in music education from an accredited college or university.
Valid Massachusetts DESE Teaching License in Music.
Demonstrated piano proficiency sufficient to support warm-ups, rehearsals, and vocal coaching.
Strong knowledge of choral vocal pedagogy, conducting technique, and choral literature for secondary ensembles.
Experience directing SSA and/or SATB choral ensembles.
Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple concurrent responsibilities and deadlines.
Excellent written and oral communication skills for students, families, colleagues, and the community.
Commitment to fostering an inclusive, equitable, student-centered classroom and ensemble environment.
Genuine love of and dedication to high school students.
Willingness and ability to fulfill evening, weekend, and travel obligations associated with this position.
Preferred
Master’s degree in music education or Choral Conducting.
Experience teaching guitar, popular music, or introductory theatre/acting at the secondary level.
Experience directing a cappella ensembles.
Experience as vocal director or musical director for high school productions.
Knowledge of current best practices in music education, including culturally responsive and accessible arts education.
Demonstrated success with ensemble recruitment, retention, and program growth.
Active NAfME member.
