INTERNAL CITY-COUNTY APPLICANTS ONLY. The Marion County Public Defender Agency provides legal representation for Marion County citizens who cannot afford to hire their own lawyer in matters involving liberty interests, including criminal cases. Our services involve the felony, misdemeanor, Title IV D, civil commitment, and juvenile courts, as well as cases related to termination of parental rights and appeals. The agency offers education, services, and programs focused on alternate ways to serve jail sentences, cultivating a productive, collaborative, and compliant work environment for the needs of Indianapolis and Marion County.

Position Responsibilities

Interview clients, gathering contact information and case details.

Answer phone calls and place calls per the supervising attorney’s directives.

Maintain case assignments for attorneys in accordance with commission standards.

Act as point of contact between client and attorney, relaying information to and from both parties.

Explain court procedures to clients.

Request assistance from social workers, investigators, interpreters, and other specialists for case preparation.

Visit clients in office or Adult Detention Center (ADC) when required.

Draft and file legal documents, including subpoenas, appearances, and motions at attorneys’ direction.

Prepare pleadings under attorneys’ guidance.

Create and maintain client files in Quest, PDIS, and OneNote from initial hearing to disposition.

Secure documents for deposition and trial (certified copies, audio, video, CAD reports, etc.).

Provide backup assistance to other paralegal staff in daily duties.

Assist attorneys in court by taking notes, supporting client families, and providing basic information as directed.

Operate general office equipment (computer, copier, fax).

Maintain confidentiality at all times.

Other duties as reasonably directed by management.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Well‑organized and capable of working under pressure.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Typing and computer proficiency.

Knowledge of legal terminology, court procedure, and legal ethics.

Effective interpersonal skills to interact with employees, clients, and the public in a professional, courteous, and concise manner.

Ability to handle high‑pressure situations and prioritize duties amid unexpected deadlines.

Preferred

Associate degree or certificate in Paralegal Studies.

At least two years of paralegal experience.

Familiarity with research techniques or law enforcement support.

Other relevant information: Working conditions are a standard office/courtroom environment with occasional visits to the Adult Detention Center. Physical requirements include sitting at a desk most of the day, light lifting (5‑10 lb), extended keyboard use, and basic visual and auditory perception. Salary is paid bi‑weekly.
