Civil Site Design Engineer (PE) – Commercial Development & Utilities
McKinney, TX | Fully Remote
Modern Engineering Solutionsisn’tanother civil engineering firm stuck in the old ways.
We built this company because we were tired of watching talented engineers waste hours on CAD work instead of actually designing.Tired of seeing projects get “approved” but notoptimized. Tired of the billable hour obsession that punishes efficiency.
Since 2018,we’vecompleted 265+ projects by doing things differently. Our engineers work remotely, use AI to handle thebusywork, and focus on what matters: solving real problems for developers and municipalities. No unnecessary meetings. No office politics.Just goodengineering.
You’ll Be Perfect For This Role If:
Spending more time in CAD than actually designing
Endless meetings that could’ve been emails
The “just get it approved” mentality that ignores whether it’s the right solution
Being stuck in an office when the work doesn’t require it
Firms that talk about innovation but resist any real change
What We Believe
We Focus on Outcomes, Not Hours Your value isn’t how long something took—it’s what you deliver. A design that saves a client $500 K in construction costs or gets permits 3 months faster? That’s worth more than logging extra billable hours.
Speed Matters as Much as Technical Accuracy We design with schedule in mind from day one. Time-to-permit affects our clients’ bottom line as much as pipe sizing does, so we treat it like an engineering constraint.
Deep Work Over Busy Work We protect your calendar. No back-to-back meetings. No “quick syncs” that derail your afternoon. Engineers need uninterrupted time to think—that’s where quality comes from.
AI Handles the Grunt Work We use AI for first drafts of reports, structuring calculations, and handling repetitive documentation. You still do all the engineering judgment and review everything—AI makes mistakes—but it frees you up to handle 10 projects instead of 2.
We Grow Carefully We’re not chasing debt‑fueled growth. We’re rather expand slowly with cash reserves so we can say no to bad‑fit projects and yes to the work that matters.
We Keep Learning “That’s how we’ve always done it” isn’t good enough. We’re constantly refining our processes, learning from what works and what doesn’t, and getting better.
What You’ll Do
Lead commercial site development projects from concept through approval: design grading, drainage, paving, and utility layouts for commercial developments and warehouses
Create water, sewer, and stormwater systems that actually work (not just meet minimum standards)
Prepare plat approvals, site plans, and development submittals
Run stormwater calculations, design detention basins, and perform hydraulic analysis
Work directly with developers, municipalities, and reviewing agencies
Review and seal all engineering deliverables as the responsible PE
Keep projects on schedule and on budget without sacrificing quality
Serve as the primary contact for clients—you’re the engineer they trust
Navigate local, county, and state permitting requirements
Mentor junior engineers and help them develop into strong PEs
Support proposals and help grow client relationships

Strong skills in site grading, drainage design, and stormwater management

Support for conferences, training, and certifications
Clear path to grow into technical leadership roles
Leadership & Impact
Work directly with CEO Michael Groselle, PE—no layers of bureaucracy
Real input on firm direction and how we deliver projects
Help us prove there’s a better way to do civil engineering
Why This Matters
Right now, most commercial development projects get “approved” but not optimized. Developers lose money on overbuilt designs. Engineers burn out working late nights to hit deadlines. Municipalities struggle to find partners who understand both the technical requirements and the financial realities. We’re changing that.
When you join us, you’re helping prove that engineers can deliver more projects, at higher quality, without working themselves to death. You’re showing that modern tools and smart processes can replace the old “throw more hours at it” approach.
From warehouse logistics to mixed‑use developments, your designs will shape how communities grow—and you’ll do it without sacrificing your evenings and weekends.
This Role Isn’t For Everyone
Want the absolute cheapest engineering services (that’s not us)
Think AI has no place in engineering (we use it extensively)
See engineers as interchangeable resources (we value judgment and experience)
Believe “that’s how we’ve always done it” ends the discussion (we’re constantly improving)
How to Apply
Send us three things:
Your resume showing your relevant site development experience
A brief cover letter explaining why this approach to engineering resonates with you
A 3‑minute video walking through your approach to designing a commercial site with complex grading and stormwater challenges
We’ll review your application and get back to you within a week.
