Job Description

The primary role of reporter‑researcher is to fact‑check the articles that go into our monthly magazine—political coverage, investigative features, profiles, columns, and discursive essays. We seek applicants with demonstrated experience performing such work, covering news quickly and on deadline, obsessive about details, comfortable searching archives and databases, and dogged in reaching sources and confirming information. Occasionally, reporter‑researchers also fact‑check web‑only stories or provide advance research for an article in progress.
While fact‑checking remains the primary component, reporter‑researchers are encouraged to pitch ideas and write. We look for applicants with a sharp, lively writing style who can identify original angles on the news and who possess the initiative to pursue them.
Candidates should be skilled at working in CMS platforms, adept at docking stories, and adding the appropriate elements quickly and correctly so our print articles can appear online. Self‑starters who juggle multiple projects or tasks simultaneously will thrive.
This is a full‑time remote position, yet candidates must be based in Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Illinois, or Florida. The salary is $60,086 and includes a competitive benefits package, with a projected start date in early April 2026.
The New Republic is committed to diversity and encourages members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, LGBTQ people, people of color, people with criminal records, veterans, and people with disabilities.
To apply, submit a resume, a cover letter telling us about yourself, and at least three clips or links to articles you have fact‑checked and three clips or links to articles you have written. Include a few sentences explaining why you chose each and why they represent your work, and share three story ideas or pitches.
This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between The New Republic and The NewsGuild of New York, CWA Local 31003, AFL‑CIO.
