Role Overview
The Fire Communications Supervisor leads Oakland Fire Department’s 9‑1‑1 Dispatch Center, supervising dispatchers and overseeing daily emergency call operations. The role ensures fire and medical calls are quickly and accurately processed, coordinates response during major incidents, manages staffing and training, and maintains dispatch technology and procedures.

The City of Oakland is hiring a Fire Communications Supervisor to supervise the fire dispatch center, where 9‑1‑1 calls for fire and medical emergencies are answered and dispatched.

The dispatch center handles about 70,000 emergency calls each year, including about 49,000 medical calls.

Responsibilities

Oversee daily operations in the Fire Dispatch Center.

Support programs like MACRO (Mobile Assistance Community Responders of Oakland).

Lead and mentor a small team of dispatchers.

Qualifications

Five years of experience as a journey-level Fire Communications Dispatcher.

One year of lead or supervisory experience is desirable.

State‑certified Emergency Medical Dispatcher.

Additional Requirements

Must pass a thorough background investigation.

Must maintain a valid California Driver’s License throughout the tenure of employment or be able to travel to various locations in a timely manner.

Desirable Qualifications

Lead or supervisory dispatch experience in a public safety environment.

Customer service experience.

Bilingual skills.

Military experience, including military reserve programs.

Law Enforcement, Fire Technology, or Administration of Justice coursework.

EMT experience or other coursework in emergency medicine.

Advanced First Aid and/or CPR certifications.
