POSITION PURPOSE Assists in the conduct of research and development activities that require a high degree of skill and knowledge in a technical field.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Performs assigned tasks with minimal supervision in the R&D laboratories
Works with others to achieve project goals and may be assigned responsibility to meet specific technical objectives and schedules
Assists in analyzing results. Summarize results and report findings to higher-level technical employees
Uses technical competency to provide consulting services to others and to diagnose and resolve problems with existing equipment or systems
May make verbal presentations and instruct peers and plant personnel on technical subjects
Responsible for overseeing the Scanning Electron Microscopy Lab including the operation and maintenance of two SEMs
Serves as back-up operator for the Metallography Lab including cutting, polishing, and etching specimens, and taking photomicrographs and hardness measurements
Conducts service jobs start to finish
Serves as back-up operator for the two scanning electron microscopes
QUALIFICATIONS Competencies and Experience Required: Ability to work in a team environment
Preferred: Prior work experience in a manufacturing environment
Experience in the operation of SEMs and analytical techniques, such as EDS.
Education Required: Associate's degree or equivalent work experience
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS The employee will frequently be required to:
This position operates in an office environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, network tools/equipment, phones, photocopiers and scanners. This role is partially sedentary and partially standing. However, some walking is required.
The position may require working with laboratory equipment such as optical microscopes, SEM/EDS, bend testing, polishing machines, hardness testing, tensile testing, CVN testing, DWTT machine, band saws, thermal cutting, waterjet cutting, surface grinder, heat treating furnaces , forklift and crane.
The position requires preparing various acid solutions for etching steel specimens such as sulfuric acid, picric acid, oxalic, nital etc.
The employee will occasionally be required to:
This position will periodically require work in the mill and in the field environment with some exposure to heat/cold, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, noise and wearing safety equipment/clothing for protection from hazards
Some handling of materials is required. This would require the ability to walk, bend, kneel or stand, use of hands to finger, hold and handle, reach with hands and arms and to push/pull, lift or carry items up to 50 lbs.

POSITION TYPE – WORK HOURS - TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS Position is full time, exempt
Position works an eight (8) hour day shift, Monday through Friday – additional overtime as needed
Travel for this position is necessary and expected to comprise up to 20-25% of work hours – some international travel is possible
